After reading your glowing review of the Peugeot 205 GTi we bought ourselves a Phase 1 205 CTi - a 1986, C plate car and we're really pleased with it; so thank you for the excellent recommendation. It's been a real blast in this warm weather we've been having. It just has a couple of niggles: the clutch action is not very smooth and the car is prone to a "kangaroo" type action and run unevenly for a few moments when you lift off the power. Are these known 205 GTi traits and if so what are the possible cures? Other than these instances, the engine sounds really good and is generally pretty smooth.

It’s quite common for the clutch cable of 205s, 309s and 306s to unclip and run close to the exhaust manifold, which superheats and dries out the grease inside the cable leading to sticky action (thanks to Mike Brewer, years ago, for that tip). Probably needs a new cable and re-clipping to keep it away from the exhaust. There is a brass adjustment screw on the inlet manifold to sort out the idle speed problem.
