Basle Basle Blackpool

I watched Top Gear recently. Is it really possible that Jeremy Clarkson got over 50mpg out of the Jaguar XJ6 TDVi he drove from Basle to Blackpool often at speeds of 70-80 mph? I can’t get 50mpg from my 2.0 litre diesel X-Type.

Yesterday, I got 60mpg out of my Focus ECOnetic TDCI 110. Better than its combined figure. But I did have to drive at 50 - 70, letting it kill its own speed up hills, letting it free down hills and braking as little as possible, especially uphill because that is the greatest waste of kinetic energy.
