I have glaucoma but can't get an eye test currently. Can I still drive when my licence expires?

I have sent my driving licence renewal form to the DVLA. It expires in August. I'm 73 and have glaucoma. My eye problem means I have to have a field test by opticians but they are not doing this at moment. Will I be able to carry on driving if my licence is not renewed in time?

Section 88 of The Road Traffic Act 1988 may allow you to continue driving even when you do not hold a current driving licence. In practice, this will be when you have applied to the DVLA to renew your licence, but the licence expires while they are processing the application. But there are some conditions (which I think would require you to get that eye test). After all, glaucoma is listed as a condition that you must tell the DVLA about. I'd have a read of this if I were you: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upload...f
