Blaming the keeper

You probably think I'm paranoid but based on the DVLA's propensity to fine everyone for everything whenever possible I thought I'd better check with you to see if can offer any advice (other than to get a better psychiatrist, of course!) I've just sold my 2006 FIAT Panda to a trade dealer. The tax disc runs out at the end of the month, so of course I haven't renewed it. The dealer says he will send in all the paperwork, and I have no doubt he will. However, if the DVLA doesn't process the paperwork before the end of the month it will still consider me to be the owner with an untaxed car. I don't know how much leeway they allow but as with the last Government I suspect the answer is none. Based on my last brush with officialdom (the Passport Office) I don't have much confidence in Civil Servants these days. Do you have any advice/suggestions?

Get in touch with the DVLA entirely separately from the dealer and
register the change of keepership. You should never ever have trusted tie dealer to do this for you. It is legally your responsibility and yours alone. See www.dvla.gov.uk
