I got flashed by a speed camera - if I receive a ticket can I opt for a speed awareness course and if so will I still get penalty points?

I got flashed by a speed camera on a motorway gantry even though there was no speed limit displayed. If I receive a ticket can I opt for a speed awareness course and if so will I still get penalty points? Also will I have to advise my insurance?

You may be offered a speed awareness course depending on the speed you were recorded at and whether you have attended a speed awareness course in the last three years (or have been offered a similar course for a separate offence). Different police forces have different criteria but as a guide, you will be offered a course for up to (and including) 64mph in a 50mph zone, 75mph in a 60mph and 86mph in a 70mph limit.

A speed awareness course usually costs around £100 and will last a day or half a day (again depending on the police force). You will not, however, receive any points on your licence and you do not have to declare it your insurer.
