Has anyone used jeweller's rouge to remove minor scratches from the car windscreen and does it work? Also, is jeweller's rouge the same as cerium oxide? Thanks

It depends what sort of scratch you try to polish out. Either rouge or cerium oxide will reduce the very fine curved wear marks in the wiper arcs, but it takes time and care with a suitable polishing mop, even mounted in an electric drill.

Deep scratches are another issue altogether, has anyone ever managed to get rid of them?

I've tried to shift them before but failed miserably every time.

I tend to get a new screen put in instead, and i don't go down the insurance route, it might be slightly cheaper (and you might be susrprised here) by paying just the excess but i'd rather just buy my own and with luck have no claims of any sort to report at insurance renewal.

For screens avoid the household names and mass advertisers, instead have a word around and see who the local bodyshop or car trade uses, there will be a company who looks after these places, a chat with them can provide you with a new screen fitted at amazing prices, especially if you have a fairly common car, my last screen on a very uncommon car was £145 IIRC, well worth the money when the one it replaced had 15 years of scratches and stone chips.

Thanks galileo, I am worried about doing more harm than good if I try and polish it out. It was caused by some grit under the wiper, I can't see it at all on the outside, just on the inside, it's on the passenger side but being as I know it's there I keep looking at it. I think I will just try and forget about it.

Waste of time trying to polish marks out of a windscreen, I'm afraid. Virtually every time a new screen is going to be required.

As regards to the comment about buying your own screen without involving your insurance company if you own a pretty standard car, I'd think very carefully. I own what I'd call a pretty standard car (Ford Mondeo) and the replacement screen for that costs about £500! Plus you'd have to pay for fitting.

You could try to buy a second-hand one, I suppose, but then you'd probably find it would have marks on it and you'd still have to pay to have it fitted. Plus, if it's a heated screen like the one in my car, you'd be taking pot luck whether the heating elements were OK or not.

Thanks for your replies. I don't think it merits a new windscreen, it's not that bad and isn't in my sight line. It's just annoying being as it's the first scratch in four years, my last car had bad scratches in the middle of the windscreen and I was determined to keep this one clear!

IMO a repaired screen is worse than leaving the scratch there, as the repair leaves a magnifying effect that is very annoying.

With the rubbish/state of the road its hard keeping a clean screen

With Jewellers Rouge I polished out the scratches an incompetant glass cutter put in the new glass for the aero screens on the vintage car.

Jeweliers rouge is finely ground ferric oxide and is pink. Cerium oxide is yellow, I've never used it but the internet says either will work. You do though have to add quite a bit of elbow grease, even a mop in a Dremel does not make it a quick job.
