Uninsured driving hits 17-year high: 300,000 cars dodging cover on UK roads

The UK is seeing a massive spike in illegal driving with 300,000 uninsured vehicles currently on the roads — and Birmingham is the eye of the storm, according to the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB).

These uninsured cars include a Lamborghini Huracan Performance Spyder (pictured) being driven to a wedding in Sparkbrook, Birmingham. Initially pulled over by police for missing a front numberplate, the Lamborghini was then seized as checks confirmed it was uninsured, standing up the groom on his way to the ceremony.

The cost of cover is cited as the main reason for those breaking the law, with the Lamborghini being one of almost 160,000 uninsured cars seized in the UK in 2025, marking a 17-year high in the fight against vehicles being driven without appropriate cover.

Birmingham is a hotspot for driving uninsured, with the B25, B18, B66, B21 and B35 postcodes being five of the top 15 in the UK for accidents involving drivers with no insurance.

Young drivers most likely to be uninsured

Uninsured drivers cost the UK economy an estimated £1 billion every year. Recent research indicates that young drivers are particularly short on knowledge when it comes to insurance requirements, with an MIB survey of over 2000 UK adults showing that 18-24 year olds know the least when it comes to cover. Its survey found:

  • 52% of 18 to 24-year-olds are unaware that not all policies are set-up to auto-renew
  • 45% are unaware that not all insurance policies include the covering you to drive other vehicles as standard
  • 43% aren’t aware that they need to purchase different types of insurance depending on how they use their car, for example if they drive to or for work, or make deliveries

“Driving uninsured or with inadequate cover has serious consequences," says Angus Eaton, CEO at MIB. "This impacts long-term job prospects and independence, so we’re encouraging all drivers to check their policy is right for them today.”
