86-year-old pensioner prosecuted after one-letter typo leads to uninsured car conviction
An 86 year-old pensioner has been prosecuted for driving without insurance as a result of a simple slip of the fingers when applying for cover.
When signing up online for an annual policy from Swinton Insurance, the unnamed woman from York mistakenly typed an F instead of an S when adding the registration details for her Suzuki Splash.
Not noticing her error, she thought her policy would run from 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026, but the mistake led to her car being identified as uninsured on 6th February 2026.
The typo only came to light when the woman received a letter from the DVLA confirming that her car was uninsured and she was being prosecuted as a result.
The BBC reports that as a result of a fast-track Single Justice Procedure court process, she was handed a three-month conditional discharge instead of a fine, but has to pay a £26 victim surcharge.
In response to the Single Justice Procedure notice, the woman wrote to explain that "I understood my car was fully insured with Swinton Insurance, from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. I did not notice the registration printed wrongly and had an F instead of an S."
The woman's family also confirmed that it will increase the amount of help it offers her to ensure simple mistakes are avoided in future.
The DVLA says it will investigate and seek to overturn the conviction if a simple typo was to blame.
Insurance pitfalls to avoid
Industry body the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) offers the following advice to ensure that you stay insured as intended:
- Check your insurance renewal date so you know when it expires
- Not all policies auto-renew and expired payment cards can cause cover to lapse, so ensure you check before renewal time
- Remember to keep your details up to date if you move, change job or drive more than expected
- Using your car for work or deliveries may require commuting, business or hire-and-reward cover
- Fully comprehensive insurance often doesn’t let you drive other cars, so check for limitations, including age restrictions
- And, as with the example above, errors or typos leading to the wrong registration number, date of birth or address could invalidate your policy
