Volkswagen ID Cross revealed as Puma Gen-E rival with 271-mile range

The Volkswagen ID Cross is the fourth member of the VW MEB+ family, joining the forthcoming VW ID Polo, Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq in using the VW Group's budget-focused EV underpinnings.
On sale in Germany now, with UK sales coming soon, the ID Cross is a little larger in all dimensions than the petrol-powered VW T-Cross, including a useful 475 litres of boot space, up 20 litres on the T-Cross, and a 25-litre frunk space for storing the charging cable.
2026 Volkswagen ID Cross price and release date
VW hasn't announced UK prices and release dates yet, but has the car listed as 'coming soon' on its website. As of 15th July, the ID Cross is on sale in Germany, priced from €27,995, so expec a UK entry price of around £25,000. The top 52kWh long-range model is expected to cost around £31,000.

A product of VW's 'Pure Positive' design language, the ID Cross features a relatively simple, clean exterior with a few look-at-me details like light bars and illuminated logos.
Door cladding, chunky wheelarches and wheels up to 20-inches in diameter nod to rugged SUVs, but the ID Cross is front-drive only and very much designed for on-road use.
Inside, the clear, uncluttered look continues with VW emphasising the effort made with the ID Cross's use of materials and its physical controls, not just its digital interfaces. That said, a nod to the old school includes a retro mode for the digital dials, which have been rendered to mimic those of a Mk1 Golf.

VW UK hasn't confirmed exactly which motor and battery options will be available, but the ID Cross can be had with a choice of three motors - 116PS, 135PS and 211PS - all driving the front wheels. DCC adaptive suspension is available on the higher-power variant. Two sizes of battery 37kWh and 52kWh - will be offered.
On a DC fast charge, the smaller battery can charge at up to 90kW and the larger pack at up to 105kW. Both can recharge from 10-80% in under 25 minutes.
2026 Volkswagen ID Cross trim levels
Full specs and trim levels will be released closer to the on-sale date. In Germany, the ID Cross comes in Trend, Life and Style trims.
The ID Cross has been designed to offer a number of luxury features available on larger cars and not available on the petrol T-Cross range.
These include a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, massaging front seats and a 74x90cm panoramic roof. Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition is also available for the first time, which means the car can slow itself to a stop if it detects a red light.
Extra versatility includes vehicle to load (V2L), allowing you to carry a couple of e-bikes and charge them, too. The larger battery variant can tow up to 1200kg.
