Audi Nuvolari set to be the firm's fastest and most powerful production car to date

  • Twin-turbo 4.0 V8 and three electric motors combine for 1001PS
  • 0-62mph in 2.6 seconds, top speed of over 217mph
  • Limited to 499 units, priced from around £500,000
  • Features a number of Audi firsts, including Quattro Predictive Ride

Audi has revealed the Nuvolari, a flagship two-seater sportscar, which will become its fastest and most powerful production model when it goes into limited production next year.

Developed in just 405 days – and with 499 examples to be built – the Nuvolari takes the underpinnings and engine of sister brand Lamborghini's Temerario, giving a 0-62mph time of 2.6 seconds and a top speed of over 217mph.

The hybrid engine is wrapped in a body that's the first to feature the firm's new design philosophy, meaning the Nuvolari gives hints to what future Audis will look like.

The Nuvolari is priced from around £500,000 and prospective clients are already putting down their deposits ahead of the start of production next year, with first deliveries scheduled in 12 months time.

As with any high-end model, personalisation options abound. The car was shown in Audi’s new signature colour Titanium, as used on the Audi Concept C and the Audi Formula 1 car. However, an exposed carbon fibre option is available, rumoured to cost £100,000 extra.

The Nuvolari is the first production car to feature ‘The Radical Next’ – Audi's new design philosophy, instigated by Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella.

The dominant feature is the upright grille, which will become an Audi hallmark on all future models, while the car's surfaces are kept simple and sculptural for the benefit of aerodynamics.

The carbon-fibre exterior features F1-inspired active aero to assist with downforce, via an adaptive rear wing, and in keeping the car's hybrid components cool.

On the inside, digital instruments, carbon-backed seats and long metal paddle shifters to control the eight-speed gearbox all feature.

The traction control is also adjustable through its four settings – E-Hybrid, Balanced, Dynamic and Dynamic+ - from the steering wheel, which is a first on an Audi.

The Lamborghini Temerario donates its mid-mounted 800PS twin-turbo 4.0 V8, while there's a 150PS – and excellently named – axial flux motor sandwiched between the engine and eight-speed twin-clutch gearbox.

The front axle gets two more of the same motors, giving torque vectoring and a total system output of 1001PS, exactly the same as the original Bugatti Veyron and 81PS more than the Lamborghini, thanks to a larger 7.3kWh battery.

The Nuvolari can complete the 0-62mph sprint in 2.6 seconds, which is a tenth faster than the Lamborghini but a tenth slower than an RS e-tron GT performance. It's 217mph+ top speed beats the latter's 155mph limit, however.

Also of note is the Nuvolari's new all-wheel drive system called Quattro Predictive Ride. It brings together multiple control systems that act as one, which brings safety and performance gains.

The car constantly models what it's doing, using steering angle, acceleration, yaw rate and grip level data. If it senses a lack of grip, its systems can then respond as one, so rather than just triggering traction control, the motors redistribute drive, the brakes trim the car's speed and the active aero help to stabilise the car at the same time.

2027 Audi Nuvolari trim levels

Right now, Audi has just revealed details of the Nuvolari as a two-seater coupe. However, given its past form for run-out faster models, plus the likely addition of a drop-top model, even if you're not one of the lucky 499, we'd be surprised if there weren't more chances to snap up the next speediest Audi of all time.

Which hybrid cars have the longest range?

Which medium/large size hybrids have the greatest range?
Assuming you are looking for plug-in hybrids with the longest electric range, at present the two best options are the Omada 9 and Chery Tiggo 9, which offer an electric range of 93 and 91 miles respectively. The Toyota RAV4 offers an electric range of 85 miles, while other cars that offer a similar range are smaller hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3.
