VW boost's power and range of ID.4 and ID.5
- ID.4 and ID.5 get revamped battery lineup
- Power and range improved on several models
- Vehicle-to-Load capability introduced
- Temporarily misses out on government Electric Car Grant
Volkswagen has revamped the batteries across the ID.4 and ID.5 range of SUVs, with more power and extra range in a number of versions.
The entry level Pure model of both ID.4 and ID.5 now has a 58kWh battery in place of the old 52kWh unit, with power boosted from 170PS to 190PS. The change improves the range from 222 miles to 265 on the ID.4, and from 227 miles to 272 on the ID.5, with no price increase. However, as Volkswagen now has to re-apply for the Government's Electric Car Grant following the changes, no ID.4 or ID.5 models will be eligible for the discounts until they have re-qualified.
The ID.4 Pro and ID.5 Pro also get a larger battery – up from 77kWh to 79kWh – but power and range stay the same on the ID.4, while the ID.5 gets a slight boost from 344 miles of range to 351. The price is up by £570. On the ID.4 Pro Match, the battery stays at 77kWh but the power is boosted to 299PS from 286, and range increases from 325 miles to 341 miles. The price also rises by £570.
The sporty ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX models get a smaller capacity battery (down from 79kWh to 77kWh) but its range improves from 322 miles to 326 on the ID.4 and from 327 miles to 331 miles on the ID.5. The power remains unchanged but the price goes up by £655.
As well as the changes to the power of the cars, VW has also introduced Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which lets users charge external appliances using the car's battery via a three-pin socket.
Additionally, the oft-hated haptic feedback buttons on the steering wheel have been ditched for physical buttons, the Traffic Assist safety feature has been upgraded to better protect pedestrians and cyclists, and wireless phone charging has been boosted from 5W to 15W.
There are a few model-specific changes, too. The Pure Essential trims on both cars now get larger 19-inch steel wheels, and Pure Match models get an electric boot lid as standard. The braked towing capacity on the ID.5 Pro 4Motion has increased from 1200kg to 1800kg.
