VW reveals revamped ID.3 Neo

  • VW ID.3 is now known as the ID.3 Neo
  • New car has a revised look and higher-quality interior
  • Battery range increases to 391 miles
  • UK specs not yet confirmed

Volkswagen has revealed the revamped and renamed ID.3 electric hatchback. Not content with a mere facelift, the car is now known as the ID.3 Neo, a name that harks back to the ID.3's code name when it was under development.

The overhaul includes a revised front end with new lights and a redesigned cabin with different controls and upgraded materials. There's an upgraded Travel Assist feature that includes traffic-light detection, and physical buttons on the steering wheel, moving away from the touch controls that many users have found annoying.

There are tweaks to the drive system, too, with extra range from the battery and more torque than in the outgoing model.

First launched in 2020, the VW ID.3 has already had a facelift in 2023. Volkswagen will hope the changes will keep it competitive against rivals that include the Cupra Born, the Renault Megane and the Vauxhall Astra Electric.

The exterior revisions to the ID.3 Neo are around the front end, with new headlights and a revised design closely related to that of other VW ID. cars. There's a full-width light strip across the front, with an illuminated VW logo.

Inside, there are new materials and a new design of steering wheel, with a flattened rim at the top and bottom, and actual buttons rather than the touch-sensitive pads of the outgoing model. There's also a new infotainment system, called Innovision, with a 12.9-inch central display and a 10.25-inch driver display, called the Digital Cockpit.

VW has adjusted the drive system of the ID.3 Neo to give drivers more torque and better efficiency, which means the car's maximum range, according to WLTP measurements, is up to 391 miles.

UK specs are yet to be confirmed, but in Europe there are three power outputs – 170PS, 190PS and 231PS. The entry-level model comes with a 50kWh battery, the middle-spec car has a 58kWh battery and the top-spec model has a 79kWh unit. The top-spec battery can charge at up to 183kW using a suitable DC charger, while the other batteries have a capacity of up to 105kW.

More details about performance and spec will be released with the UK market information.

Can I fit run flat tyres to my Volkswagen ID.3?

Can I fit run flats to my 2023 VW ID3 Pro?
Technically it would be possible to fit run flat tyres to your Volkswagen, but to do so may require some compromises in terms of the type of tyre you select and your vehicle's performance. Depending on the exact specification of your ID.3 it could be fitted with 18, 19 or 20 inch wheels, but from the factory it is fitted with tyres that have a speed rating of T, which is a maximum of 118mph reflecting its limited top speed as an electric vehicle. Broadly speaking, run flat tyres tend to come in high performance specification where handling, grip and high speed capability are paramount, whereas the tyres currently fitted to your car are designed for low rolling resistance, and are relatively narrow for their size. To fit run flats to your car would require a significant change in tyre size, which would potentially change the ride quality, handling characteristics and range of your vehicle, so we would only advise doing so after consulting with a reputable tyre fitter to find a suitable size for your vehicle.
