2026 Mazda CX-5 styling, interior and technology

At 4690mm long, 1860mm wide and 1695mm tall, the latest Mazda CX-5 is bigger than its predecessor in every dimension, with a longer wheelbase (2815mm) that should provide extra legroom. The nose is higher with a wider grille than before, and the headlights have a discreet number 5 hidden within the lens. The wheel arches have a shape inspired by traditional Japanese woodworking, and the traditional Mazda badge at the back is gone, replaced by MAZDA lettering, in case you wondered who made it.

Wheel sizes vary from 17 inches to 19 inches depending on trim, with LED headlights as standard. Roof rails are included from Centre-Line trim upwards and a panoramic sunroof is standard on the Exclusive-Line and Homura models. There are eight colour choices – Navy Blue, Arctic White, Aero Grey, Jet Black, Polymetal Grey, Machine Grey, Rhodium White, and Soul Red Crystal.

The interior features a large touchscreen – 12.9 or 15.6 inches across, depending on trim – that dominates the centre console and replaces most physical controls. There’s also a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims being in luxuries like leather upholstery, ambient lighting in a choice of seven colours, and a panoramic sunroof for extra airiness in the cabin.

An eight-speakers sound system is standard with a 12-speaker Bose setup in Exclusive-Line and Homura models. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on all models.

Mazda says there's 64mm more knee room and 29mm more headroom for rear-seat passengers, with doors that open wider than before.

The boot size is up to 583 litres of space, with a lower loading lip and a flat floor to give easier access. Fold down the back seats, which split 40:20:40, and you'll get up to 2019 litres.

2026 Mazda CX-5 engines

Under the bonnet, there’ll be just one option to start with. A naturally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol engine, with a 24V mild-hybrid system, makes 141PS and 238Nm of torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. It replaces the 2.0-litre engine of the outgoing CX-5, and should be good for a leisurely 10.5-second acceleration to 62mph from standstill. It promises a combined fuel economy of up to 40.4mpg.

The CX-5 is front-wheel-drive as standard, but i-Active all-wheel drive is available on Exclusive-Line and Homura models. The extra weight of the AWD system raises the 0-62mph time to 10.9 seconds while dropping the fuel economy to 38.2mpg/

The chassis has been tuned specifically for European roads, with Mazda pitching its signature blend of comfort and agility. The springs are softer than before, with revised dampers to better absorb lumpy road surfaces, and we’re also promised improved steering feel and pedal response for a more engaging driving experience. There are new seats designed for better spinal support and reduced head movement.

All models have a braked towing capacity of 2000kg.
