Mercedes reveals sleek new VLE

  • Large 115kWh battery with more than 430-mile range
  • Promises MPV practicality with limousine-like ride and handling
  • 800-volt architecture means mega-fast charging
  • UK specs and prices yet to be announced

Mercedes has pulled back the covers on its new generation of electric MPV-cum-limousine, the VLE. With a range of more than 430 miles on a single battery charge, it promises luxurious comfort with huge amounts of practicality. Expect to see them dropping off celebrities and ferrying around executives from later this year.

The new Mercedes VLE gets much sleeker, futuristic looks and a new high-tech platform underneath, with 800-volt architecture that allows for mega-fast charging. It has a suitably large 115kWh (usable) battery to match.

To drive, Mercedes promises limousine-like ride and handling from the VLE, with Airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering for tighter manoeuvring – it has a turning circle of 10.9 metres.

There's no indication of price or a firm release date yet, but expect UK specifications and prices to be announced later this year.

2026 Mercedes VLE styling, interior and tech

The new Mercedes VLE may be big and square, but it's relatively aerodynamic and streamlined with a drag efficient of 0.25. The looks are sleek and modern, with bulging "power domes" on the bonnet and a new style of grille, which on some trims is illuminated. Star-shaped daytime running lights are standard, and customers can choose a standing star emblem on the bonnet, or an integrated central star in the grille.

At the back, there are arc design taillights integrated into the spoiler and a light strip in an inverted U shape that frames the whole back of the car. There's a seperately opening window at the back, too, designed for accessing in tight parking spaces.

The Mercedes VLE has electric sliding doors on both sides. Full UK details have yet to be announced, but we know that inside, customers will get a choice of layouts for up to eight people. Manually operated seats have four integrated wheels to allow them to be moved back and forth, locked in position or even removed completely. Electrically adjustable seats can be reconfigured using an app. There's also a Grand Comfort Seat option with a pillow, wireless charging, lumbar support, massage function and calf support all built in.

The large cabin is made more airy through a Sky View panoramic roof, which includes an electric blind for when the sun is too much.

The Mercedes VLE is crammed with tech, including a retractable 31.3 inch 8K panoramic screen that hides away in the headliner. It has a split-screen function and an eight-megapixel camera built in, meaning passengers can watch films, play games or even join video conferences while on the move.

General infotainment duties are taken care of by the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), with three screens behind a single pane of glass. There's a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central screen and another for the passenger to enjoy games, apps and video streaming.

2026 Mercedes VLE motors, batteries and range

Two Mercedes VLE models have been announced so far. The first is the Mercedes VLE 300, which uses a 115kWh NMC (nickel manganee cobalt) battery for more than 430 miles of range according to Mercedes' provisional estimates. That figure should be checked by official WLTP testing soon. The motor is front-mounted and develops 276PS.

There will also be a VLE 400 4Matic model with all-wheel drive, which uses a second motor at the rear. Combined, the two motors make 415PS for a 6.5-second 0-62mph acceleration time.

The VLE's 800V architecture means it can charge very quickly at more than 300kW. Mercedes quotes up to 220 miles of added range in 15 minutes, with a suitable charger.

More battery options will follow in 2027 – two new models with an 80kWh lithium-iron-phosphate-cathode (LFP) battery are planned.

On top of that, there are four optional equipment packages – Advanced, Advanced Plus, Premium and Premium Plus.

Then there are further options packages, including a selection of alloy wheels from 19 inches to 22 inches in diameter, a Night Package, and various interior trim elements. Customers can also choose from three different centre console, from a small walk-through version to a more impressive version with temperature controlled compartments, UV disinfection and an Air-Balance fragrance generator.

In short, there's a wealth of customisation options.

What comfortable and reliable hybrid do you recommend?

I have had my Lexus IS 300H since 2014 with trouble free motoring, should I change it which would car would you recommend for the same comfort? I don't want an electric just a petrol hybrid.
Lexus discontinued the IS in the UK a while ago. If you're open to the idea of an SUV instead of a saloon, the NX would give you a similar experience in terms of comfort and the use of a petrol hybrid drive system. Although you're open to the idea of something from another brand, Lexus is unique in offering premium full-hybrid cars, where rivals like BMW and Mercedes instead use plug-in hybrid setups, which are a very different ownership prospect.
