The Jaecoo 8 is a new 7-seater PHEV with an 83-mile range

  • Jaecoo's new flagship large SUV
  • 83-mile range from plug-in hybrid system
  • Choice of 6 or 7 seats, AWD as standard
  • Priced from £45,500

Jaecoo has revealed its new top-of-the-range SUV, the Jaecoo 8 SHS-P. It's a large plug-in hybrid that follows hot on the heels of the MGS9 PHEV in offering an alternative to cars like the Skoda Kodiaq, the Volvo XC90 and the Kia Sorento.

The Jaecoo 8 will be available as a seven-seater or as a luxurious six-seater. Both are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor for a total power output of 428PS, powering all four wheels. The car's battery gives it a very impressive electric-only range of up to 83 miles, and it's compatible with fast DC charging.

Inside, Jaecoo has crammed the 8 full of features, including a powerful sound system and massage front seats as standard – all for considerably less than £50k, and with a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Jaecoo calls the look of the new 8 "modernist luxury", but with a rugged edge. It's intended to follow the bold visual identity of the firm's other cars, most notably the very successful Jaecoo 7, while adding a new level of refinement befitting the brand's new flagship. The now-familiar Jaecoo "waterfall" grille remains, and there are hidden door handles for a more streamlined look. All cars get a panoramic sunroof as standard.

There's a choice of paint colours: Amazonite Blue, Basalt Black, Granite White, Iced Slate Grey, and Pearl Silver. You can also opt for a two-tone paint scheme, which is optional on the Luxury and standard on the Executive model.

Inside, there are two distinct configurations depending on the model you choose. That said, all models have dual 12.3-inch screens – one for the digital driver's display and one for the infotainment – and a 14-speaker Sony sound system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are sytandard, as are two cooled wireless charging pads. You also get power-adjustable front seats on both models, which feature heating, ventilation and five different massage modes.

Jaecoo hasn't specified the size of the boot, save to say there's up to 2021 litres of space when the back seats are all folded down.

The Jaecoo 8's SHS-P plug-in hybrid system uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with a hybrid system that uses a three-speed automatic transmission and has all-wheel drive as standard. It produces 428PS and 580Nm of torque, enabling the Jaecoo 8 to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.8 seconds.

The battery gives it a range of up to 83 miles using only electric power, and it supports DC fast charging at up to 40kW, which means the battery can be boosted from 30% capacity to 80% in around 20 minutes. The car also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) at up to 6.6kW, meaning you can charge small appliances from the battery using a three-pin plug socket.

Jaecoo says the car can cope with off-road conditions, with a wading depth of up to 600mm, lockable differentials and an adaptive all-terrain response system.

What happens to a new car warranty if a manufacturer goes bust?

Looking on the internet at the number of EV makers that have gone bust in China, we are now experiencing a glut of Chinese EVs into the UK. Jaecoo, Chery, Great Wall Motor, NIO, XPeng, Leapmotor, Zeekr, Aion, Geely, BYD, Li Auto. With this amount of new EVs coming to this country if they were to go bankrupt what would happen to the warranties?
It is correct that a number of Chinese EV manufacturers have gone bankrupt in recent years, following a downturn in sales and a reduction in government subsidies. In the event that you owned a vehicle from a manufacturer that went bankrupt, the warranty would likely cease to be valid unless the manufacturer was bought out by another company. If you are considering a Chinese EV we would recommend those from the larger manufacturers such as BYD, MG and Geely.
