Mercedes overhauls S-Class with huge update
- Most extensive S-Class revision ever, with more than half the car revised
- Styling updates include illuminated grille and new lights
- Electrified petrol, diesel and PHEV power remains, topped by 537PS V8
- On sale later in 2026
Mercedes-Benz has revealed a heavily updated version of its flagship saloon, the S-Class. Although described as a facelift, Mercedes says more than 50% of the car’s components have been newly developed, updated or refined, making this the most extensive update within a single S-Class generation.
Despite the scope of the update, the visual tweaks are more evolutionary than radical, but sharpen up the S-Class's looks. There's a larger radiator grille that's illuminated for the first time, and can be optionally paired with an illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet. Revised headlights and new rear lights, with star-shaped graphics, further pick out the new model from its predecessor, which first launched back in 2020.
Inside, the emphasis is firmly on technology and an upgrade in perceived quality. All versions of the S-Class now come with Merc's MBUX Superscreen as standard, which combines the central infotainment screen and a front passenger screen beneath a single glass panel. There's also a big focus on the rear seats (the S-Class is a favourite among limo drivers), with various configurations available to suit different needs.
Under the skin, Mercedes has kept its broad range of electrified petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid power options, and revised them all for extra smoothness and efficiency. There are also updates to the car's suspension, including revised air suspension and standard rear-axle steering, all designed to boost the S-Class's comfort and manoeuvrability rather than change its character.
2026 Mercedes S Class price and release date

The updated Mercedes S-Class will go on sale internationally in early 2026, but UK pricing and final specifications haven't been confirmed yet. In Germany, prices start at €121,356 for the S 350 d 4MATIC, which is around £105,000.
2026 Mercedes S-Class styling, interior and technology

The S-Class's exterior changes focus on lighting and detailing. The grille is around 20% larger than before and can now be illuminated, while the optional illuminated bonnet star makes its debut on the S-Class. There are new headlights with a wider, higher-resolution field of light, and redesigned rear lights that incorporate star motifs. There are also new alloy wheel designs and paint finishes to choose from, adding to the myriad personalisation options.
Inside, the standard MBUX Superscreen setup dominates the dashboard. The system runs on Mercedes’ new MB.OS operating system, which allows for over-the-air updates and supports more advanced driver assistance and infotainment functions than before. The latest MBUX software brings with it improved voice control, new 3D navigation visuals and expanded app functionality.
There's also a redesigned centre console and new trim materials, including open-pore woods and metallic textile finishes. For the first time, a leather-free interior option is available.
2026 Mercedes S-Class engines, performance and fuel economy

The facelifted S-Class keeps its familiar range of electrified powertrains, but with further revisions compared to the original model. The six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines – the S450 4Matic, S5004Matic, S350d 4Matic and S450d 4Matic – continue with mild-hybrid assistance, but have been tweaked to improve smoothness, emissions performance and low-speed response. The petrol models have more torque than before - up to 640Nm.
The plug-in hybrid versions – the S450e and the S580e 4Matic – are also updated, offering an electric-only driving range of up to around 62 miles under official WLTP testing. The S450e also has 75PS more power.
At the top of the range, the revised S580 4Matic uses an updated 4.0-litre V8 producing 537PS and 750Nm of torque, with engineering changes and mild-hybrid technology for what Mercedes says will be smoother power delivery than the pre-facelift car.
Opt for the armoured S680 Guard anbd you'll get a 6.0-litre V12 engine with 612PS and 830Nm.
All versions now feature a 48-volt electrical system as standard, as well as revised air suspension, updated damping control and rear-axle steering fitted, with more advanced body control systems available as options.
2026 Mercedes S-Class trim levels

Full UK trim details are still to be confirmed, but the S-Class will again be made in both in standard and long-wheelbase forms. AMG Line and AMG Line Plus packages return, adding sportier styling elements compared with the standard car. The Manufaktur customisation programme has been expanded significantly, with a wider choice of bespoke exterior colours, interior finishes and various made-to-measure options to fully personalise your new car. And if you're paranoid (or they're really out to get you), an armoured S-Class Guard variant also remains part of the range.
