New MG4 Urban priced from £23,495

  • New MG4 Urban hatchback goes on sale in February
  • 201-mile/258-mile range
  • Priced from £23,495
  • (Unrelated) regular MG4 also gets an update

This is the new MG4 Urban, which goes on sale from February at just £23,495, which makes it one of the most affordable electric cars on the market.

Despite the name, it's unrelated to the existing MG4, which is also getting an update for 2026. Both the existing MG4 and the MG4 Urban will be sold alongside each other.

The MG4 Urban was first revealed in China last year, and scored a maximum five-star score from independent safety organisation Euro NCAP towards the end of the year. Now MG has confirmed it will be coming to our shores, where it will be a rival for cars like the BYD Dolphin, the Cupra Born, and more.

Unlike the existing MG4, the MG4 Urban is front-wheel drive. Two power options will be available, across two trims, with a range of up to 258 miles on the Long Range model. Exactly what's included in each trim hasn't yet been announced.

As well as being more affordable than the MG4 proper, the MG4 Urban is less aggressive in its looks and slightly larger than it namesake.

The regular MG4 is also getting a spruce up, being positioned a bit more upmarket and getting a new interior. The entry-level model us now a 64kWh Premium version starting at £29,995. That's a £2750 reduction on the outgoing model of the same spec, but with the old 49kWh battery now ditched, it means entry into the MG4 range now costs some £3k more than it used to.

2026 MG4 Urban

The MG4 Urban is due to go on sale in February although no firm date has been announced yet. Prices start at £23,495 for the Standard Range car in Comfort trim, while the same trim with a Long Range battery costs from £25,495. The Premium Long Range model costs £27,995.

For comparison, the Cupra Born starts at more than £36,000 and the BYD Dolphin costs from just over £30k.

The standard MG4 range now starts at £29,995 for the Premium Long Range model, £32,995 for the Premium Extended Range and £33,995 for the MG4 XPower performance model.

2026 MG4 Urban styling, interior and technology

2026 MG4 Urban

The look of the MG4 Urban is softer than the angular MG4, with inspiration taken from the Cyberster sports car. Despite its price point, it's actually slightly larger than the existing MG4 – longer by 108mm, and taller and wider, too.

We've yet to see official pictures or details of the car's interior – more information should be made available before it goes on sale.

The standard MG4 has had its interior overhaul with a bigger 12.8-inch touchscreen and 10.25-inch driver display, with an updated infotainment system. There are new, higher-quality materials and compared to the outgoing model, there are new handles, steering wheel, air vents and centre console, and different seats.

2026 MG4 Urban engines, performance and fuel economy

2026 MG4

The new MG4 Urban is capable of housing semi-solid state batteries, which can hold more energy than the types of batteries more commonly found in EVs. However, we haven't had technical details from MG about which batteries are coming to the UK.

What we do know is that there will be a 43kWh Standard Range battery that has a range of up to 201 miles according to official WLTP figures, and a Long Range setup with a 54kWh battery for a 258-mile range. No performance or efficiency details have been revealed so far.

The standard MG4 (pictured above) ditches the smaller 49kWh battery found in its entry-level current version, so the range now starts with a 64kWh battery with a 280-mile range. There's also an Extended Range model with a 88kWh battery and a 329-mile range. The MG4 XPower continues with its 64kWh battery and dual-motor setup for a very rapid 3.9-second sprint from standstill to 62mph.

Both the MG4 and the MG4 Urban have a seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty.
