MG S9 PHEV revealed... by accident?

  • MG's first seven-seat SUV
  • Revealed in Euro NCAP safety test results
  • Known as the MG QS in Australia
  • 1.5-litre petrol engine and plug-in hybrid system

Say hello to the new MG S9 PHEV, which is headed to Europe. Not that MG has announced anything yet – instead, the S9 is the second MG to be inadvertently revealed by Euro NCAP. The safety organisation included the new seven-seat SUV in its latest round of test results before MG could officially reveal it, much like the MG S6 EV was unveiled earlier this year.

The test results are confirmation that MG will be bringing its new large plug-in hybrid (PHEV) to Europe, after previously releasing it as the MG QS in Australia. However, with no official confirmation from MG as yet, firm details on UK availability and pricing aren't available.

What we do know is that the MG S9 will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain using a 1.5-litre petrol engine. That's a change from the Aussie-spec QS, which has a pure petrol engine and a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It could well be that the S9 uses the same PHEV system as the MG HS, which would give it a large 25kWh battery that delivers up to 75 miles of electric-only driving in the smaller HS.

If confirmed for the UK, the MG S9 PHEV will likely offer a value-for-money alternative to cars like the Skoda Kodiaq and the Peugeot 5008. Oh, and it scored the maximum five stars in its Euro NCAP tests.

2026 MG S9 PHEV price and release date

As MG has yet to even officially announce the S9 PHEV, we don't have any firm dates or pricing yet. However, educated guesses would suggest a UK release some time in 2026, and a starting price of between £35,000 and £40,000.

2026 MG S9 PHEV styling, interior and technology

MG S9 PHEV crash test

The seven-seat S9 is big and bold, with styling that reflects the modern look of other cars in the MG range while also sporting new elements to set it apart, like the large grille with chrome elements that run up into the headlights. The door handles are set flush into the doors for extra aerodynamic efficiency.

Inside – based on the QS, at least –  there's a dual-screen infotainment and instrument setup dominating the dashboard, and a clean, modern design with manual buttons for the air conditioning system. A large panoramic sunroof is available.

Space-wise, there should be ample space for five with two smaller seats in the third row. In Australia, the car has 203 litres of space with all seven seats in place, or 517 litres with the third row dropped, expanding to 1052 litrews with all the back seats folded. However, the introduction of extra electrical componentry for the PHEV system could lower those numbers.

2026 MG S9 PHEV engine, performance and fuel economy

All we know about the S9's plug-in system so far is that it uses a 1.5-litre engine. Further to that, we'll have to wait and see what's confirmed when MG announces the car officially.
