Renault 5 2024: Prices, specs and release date

  • New Renault 5 revives the famous little hatch as an EV
  • Retro-look styling stays true to the original
  • Has an impressive EV range of up to 248 miles
  • Arrives in Q1 2025 with prices likely starting from around £25,000

The new Renault 5 is getting ready for a retro recreation as the famous French model is reborn as a pint-sized small electric car.

The new Renault 5 has officially launched at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show in February and Renault is already taking early deposits from buyers in the UK.

Part of a radical new range of retro electric Renaults, the new Renault 5 will in 2025 be joined by a new Renault 4, with a new Renault Twingo arriving in 2026. The range of cars will effectively replace the popular Renault Zoe in the firm’s line-up.

Key competitors for the new Renault 5 are growing all the time. There’s the Peugeot e-208, the stylish MINI Electric and the similarly retro looking Honda e.

In summer 2024, the Dacia Spring will offer bargain-basement competition to the new Renault 5, while the new Citroen e-C3 will be a well-priced alternative.

2024 Renault 5 prices and release date

New Renault 5 prices will likely be relatively affordable, despite the car being such a fashionable retro-style model. In Europe, bosses say it will cost less than €25,000 and while that includes incentives, it may still end up costing from well under £30,000 when it arrives in the UK.

New Renault 5 prices will be confirmed later in 2024. It will be offered in three trims, called Evolution, Techno and Iconic Five.

New Renault 5 deliveries will begin in Q1 2025. Those eager to be first in line can buy a £150 R-Pass from Renaut dealers, securing their place in the line.

2024 Renault 5 styling, interior and technology

The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric has all the styling flourishes made famous by the original model, brought up-to-date in a retro redesign. Bosses call it a “cult icon redesigned for the modern age”.

The headlights are modelled on the Renault 5 from the 1980s, while the squat stance and bulging wheelarches mimic the famous Renault 5 GT Turbo.

There is black plastic lower body cladding, wheelarch extensions and large 18-inch alloy wheels that perfectly fill the arches. The new Renault 5 is a five-door too, with hidden rear door handles.

At the rear, the new Renault 5 has the same straight, sharply-angled tailgate as the 1980s Renault 5, complete with vertically-mounted tail lamps that. Here, they’re cleverly made out of LEDs and have a 3D construction to aid aero efficiency.

Retro fans will also love the cool new Renault 5 logo that looks like the original from the 1970s. Buyers can choose from five colours, with two bold choices – Pop Yellow and this Pop Green – featuring alongside more conventional white, blue and black.

Another cool feature is a reinvention of the classic bonnet air intake. On the new Renault 5 E-Tech electric, it becomes a charge indicator light which, when fully charged, forms the ‘5’ logo in LED. It even lights up as the driver approaches.

The new Renault 5 has a fun interior too. The two-tier padded dashboard mimics the original, and various colour and trim options help bring it to life. Techno versions even have a wonderful denim upholstery that's made from 100% recycled material.

The top-spec new Renault 5 Iconic Five further underlines the vintage finish with a colourful interior and 'Renault 5' signature on the dashboard that is illuminated at night.

The new Renault 5 uses the firm’s latest Google-based infotainment technology. This will be fully-connected and deliver some fun apps to new Renault 5 E-Tech electric owners, as well as digitally integrating into their lifestyle. The setup comprises two 10.0-inch horizontal screens, in a binnacle designed to reference the original Renault 5.

In terms of practicality, the new Renault 5 should offer decent space for passengers, and the 277-litre boot is OK for a small car. The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a compact car, measuring just 3.92 metres long – similar in size to a new MINI Electric.

For those who need something bigger, the upcoming new Renault 4 will offer more space and practicality. Meanwhile, the new Renault Twingo will, from 2026, deliver an even more city-friendly size. It’s like Renault has it all worked out…

2024 Renault 5 engines, performance and fuel economy

The new Renault 5 is based on an advanced new architecture called AmpR Small. This is a front-wheel drive setup with high-tech multi-link rear suspension. It will deliver a sophisticated drive, aided by new features such as brake-by-wire tech.

The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric has a 52kWh battery in top-spec guise. This will officially give a WLTP electric driving range of up to 248 miles – a generous amount for a city car. This will be the battery offered from launch.

Later, a more affordable new Renault 5 E-Tech with a 40kWh battery is expected to launch. Even this has a decent range of 186 miles.

The new Renault 5 is available with two power outputs, either 120PS or 150PS. The more powerful motor will offer 0-62mph performance in under 8.0 seconds. It also has 100kW DC rapid charging tech, so will go from 15% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes.

The new Renault 5 should be stable in corners too, helped by a new type of battery design that splits the pack into four, so it can be mounted lower down in the chassis.

The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric also features V2G or vehicle-to-grid technology. This will allow the car to sell energy to the electricity grid, saving owners money and cutting their overall charging bill.
