Geneva Motor Show 2019: revised Volkswagen Passat breaks cover

Published 05 March 2019

Volkswagen has given its popular Passat a heavy revamp - with semi-autonomous technology, a digital cockpit and a longer electric range from the GTE plug-in hybrid model amongst the highlights.

You could be forgiven for not spotting any changes to the Passat in these pictures from the Geneva Motor Show as cosmetic updates are limited to redesigned bumpers, now-standard LED lights and the addition of three new paint colours.

The cabin is even more upmarket than before - edging the Passat even closer to premium rivals such as the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. An 11.7-inch digital cockpit will be available as an option and replaces conventional analogue dials behind the steering wheel.

A new 9.2-inch infotainment system is also available, offering always-online capability. This’ll provide real-time traffic updates as well as access to online features such as internet radio and online-based voice control. Apple CarPlay will also offer wireless integration of iPhone apps.

Under the new WLTP test cycle, the Passat GTE plug-in hybrid can now cover up to 43 miles under electric power alone before the petrol engine kicks in.

To encourage interest in the updated Passat, Volkswagen has revealed a limited edition R-Line model based on the estate. Limited to 2000 units across Europe, the R-Line estate will be available with a chance of 240PS diesel or 272PS petrol engines.

Finished exclusively in Moonstone Grey, the Passat R-Line features a number of black elements, include high-gloss black 19-inch alloy wheels. It’s not been confirmed whether the Passat R-Line will be sold in the UK.

UK prices for the updates Passat are yet to be announced but we expect there’ll be a small increase over the current £23,495 start price. It will go on sale in May 2019.

Is the GTE's electric range 43 miles or 34 miles? A we'll known UK based car website and magazine is quoting the lower figure. Does the press release confirm a number?
