Should inactive drivers take a re-test before driving again?

A majority of drivers believe those planning a return to the road after a long break should have to retake their practical driving test before getting back behind the wheel.
Nearly 6 in 10 believe returning drivers should have to retake the practical driving test, while half believe theory tests should be mandatory too.
A lengthy driving break of five to seven years justifies mandatory retesting, reckon a third of people quizzed by Uswitch car insurance.
However, a quarter say a break of between two to four years should trigger a retest – and 5% believe even a break of less than two years should require retesting.
Currently, if someone holds a valid driving licence, they’re legally allowed on the road, no matter how long it’s been since they last drove.
22% of UK households don’t own a car, while post-pandemic lifestyle shifts have made driving less essential for some. This is leading many licence holders to take long breaks from driving.
Even those who don’t agree with full mandatory retesting believe returning drivers should have to take refresher lessons. An average of three lessons would suffice, they say.
Reasons for supporting either mandatory retesting or refresher lessons include brushing up on driving skills and experience, maintaining public safety, ensuring they’re aware of current driving laws and regulations plus making sure they’re still confident on the road.
There are car insurance considerations for returning drivers too, says Uswitch expert Leoni Moniska. "If you cancelled your policy for the duration of your break, this may be deemed as a lapse in insurance, which some insurers may consider higher risk – potentially increasing your premiums.
"While insurers don’t usually ask how long it’s been since you last drive, a gap in your insurance history could still impact quotes.
"It’s also important that the car you’re driving is safe, especially if it hasn’t been used in a while. And if you’re unfamiliar with the car you’re driving, or it’s new, make sure you’re aware of all controls and tech features before setting off.”
Do I have to retake my test if I am banned from driving for getting 12 points?
