BMW 1 Series - Please recommend some reliable car dealerships UK - ky1

Hi all,

I want to buy a new car from a dealership (as I have had bad experience going private) - can you please recommend any reliable honest dealerships where I can get a good price, honest salesman and a well looked after car?

I am not after anything flashy, just a 2005+ BMW 1 Series. I will be getting this on finance and of course I know it will come with it wear and tears over the years, just dont want any extreme unexpected surprises.

Please give recommendations of dealers that you use or have used, or dealerships that you have heard great things about.

Thanks in advance,

An area you live in might be of some use to give some advice,BMW 1 if it hasn,t already had the timing chain changed you can factor in doing that not the best of BMWs that old.

The planet Zog is probably your best bet !

To be serious, you're looking wanting an out-of-warranty car, up to 8 years old, so you'll inevitably find the usual mixture of good and bad cars so other people's recommendations will be very subjective.

No-one ever knows how good, or bad, a dealership is until things go wrong with the car - but that's something you're trying to avoid in the first place.

Ideally you need to find a friend who knows enough about cars to weed out the dross and then let you choose.

If unexpected bills are the major factor then forget an 8 year old BMW.

For the same money you can probably get something newer and lower mileage (if not as fashionable) and that should be your priority.

Don't misunderstand me - there is nothing wrong in particular with an 8 year old 1-Series, just that any car of that age you have to accept carries more risk and potential going wrong factor than something newer and lower miles. As long as you accept that then buy one, but you will have to be at least prepared to spend some money on it during your ownership peroid - this is why used cars are cheaper than new ones.

Most warranties are pretty uselss in my opinion on older cars and whilst a reputable dealer is responsible for any major calamaties after purchase this responsibility is limited in both time and scope on such a car and after that you are on your own.

Just go into it with your eyes open and your expectations realistic and you'll be fine.

Have a look at the Good Garage guide on this site.

I got my Z3 from James Paul, a BMW specialist near Horsham in West Sussex. Expensive (although I beat them down) but the cars are immaculate.

Have a look at the Good Garage guide on this site.

I don't know what the requirements are to get listed on the Good Garage Guide - but there's some carp ones on there in my area !

It just looks like a Yellow Pages list of car dealers to me.

They're on the list because they're recommended by users.

The problem for any dealer is the 1 series itself, the car is not as reliable or robust as the manufacturer badge would suggest

Isn't that the flaw with the "system" ? Everyone with a horror story about a dealership wouldn't have to look far to find someone else who thought they were the bees knees.

The problem with recommendations is knowing and understanding the experience/knowledge of those making the recommendation. I frequently come across people recommending a dealership but when you ask for the reasons, it's just things we should all take for granted.

It comes down to performance against expectation - it's so subjective as to be unreliable statistically.

The JD Power Reliability Survey suffers from the same problem - cheap budget brands that owners have low expectations often exceed those expectations - but expensive premium brands that owners have high expectations often dissappoint.

I don't have the answer, there is no simple one.
