hi,

sorry, i'm having some problems with my laptop.

I've seen a car that I like and have been advised by the garage that following them doing a HPI check the car has done around 50,000 more than it is showing.

my question is (and it may be a stupid one). is it ok to buy this car if I know the mileage is wrong but have had the car checked over by a mechanic who says everything else is ok? I can get it for a good price based on the actual mileage but want to make sure that if i buy it I'm not going to get in trouble at some point. the garage have put an MOT on it at the mileage that it shows. can the mileage be changed back? would i need to notify the DVLA or anyone?

thanks

Nick

Personally, I would leave it; something else good will come up. You can start an investigation into it. If you buy privately and the seller doesn't specifically state 'genuine miles' or somesuch then you haven't got a leg to stand on. If it's a trader then there are steps you can take, probably starting with Trading Standards (SOGA '79 refund...!).

You can check all of the past MOTs online now for that car - if you have the VC5 or access to it.

New MOTs now show mileage records for a number of previous MOTs. Are they also showing?

There may be a perfectly valid reason for this, such as a mileometer failure causing replacement from zero. If everyone is being honest it need not be a serious problem. It all depends whether you really like the car and the price is fair. You just need to decide if you want the hassle of replaying all this when you come to sell.

We don't know the make of car, the mileage, or the price - only that it's been clocked.

so it's difficult to give advice !

But there's over 300,000 used cars for sale on Autotrader today so why pick one with a potential issue?

If a MOT certificate does not show the reason for the difference in mileages then there is a criminal aspect to the case something I would want no part of.The dealer will be as nice as pie all he wants is a problem car of his hands. As above plenty of bits of tin around for sale why create problems for yourself.

Why would the MoT certificate and/or advisory show the reason ?

The MoT tester can ask the reason but can't verify that the answer given in correct - easy to say "replacement instruments" whether it's true or just been clocked.

But I support the other advice to find another car, it's not like there's a shortage!

Because there is a place on an MOT certificate to record any anomolies in test ie. the reasons why the mileage does not follow on,I have an old Mot in front of me which says new speedo fitted at 123420 miles now reads 63341miles.Nice and legal

I kept this MOT for the very reason that a problem of legality might arise.

That's fine when honesty prevails - but every scumbag clocker could say the same thing as the tester has no way of verifying their honesty.

There are lots of cars around.

Run away from anything suspicious. Lots more to choosse from.

Waste of time and effort to investigate a dodgy one. If teh seller cannot be bothered to get it right.. run away.

Thats why I have kept a copy of the MOT.

I have never seen as many clocked cars as here in Germany takes around 30secs to alter the readings on a modern car.
