Tyres - Conti or Mich - Gazza
I am deciding over

1. Conti PremiumContact
2. Michelin Pilot Primacy

Needs to be very quiet and grippy. Currently on B'stone RE88.

205/65 R15 94V
Nissan Maxima 3.0 auto
Car weight: 1350 kg

Anyone got experience with them?

Cheers,
Garrison

No, but I did lots of research before buying tyres for the Mondeo last, and Conti Premium or Eco contact or Mich Pilot MH1's were my top 3.

The Eco Contacts I bought in the end replaced 2 of the same on the front and Firestone something's on the back. The turn in is now a little sharper, with the back feeling to want to follow the front round corners mroe readily. The trade off is that the back end feels less stable at motorway speeds. Wet and dry grip are both outstanding in my opinion.

Like Andy, I did a lot of research before replacing my Conti-Eco CPs recently. I went for Conti again mainly because the previous set had been very satisfactory regarding comfort, wet/dry grip, wear-rate and quietness so I thought it best to stick with them. I sometimes wonder if different tyres suit different makes/models of cars.

The tyres on our family's cars lead me to rate Michelin and Goodyear very highly as well. Historically, I'm not so keen on Bridgestone, Dunlop or Firestone. Not sure about Pirelli -- my daughter has some on test at the moment!

My pair of B'stone RE88 has been on the rear since 1995. Now at 100k (and still 3mm left!) I am considering having all four changed as the front (Michelin NCT2 & done 40k) has around 3mm left also.

Garrison,

Aren't NCT2s *Goodyear*, not Michelin?

Being a bit thick, I didn't pick up the point you were making. Were you saying that the front tyres have done well to last 40,000 miles on a front-wheel-drive car? If so, I agree with you.

I also agree with replacing the tyres when they have worn down to between 2 and 3 mm rather that scrape the last few legal miles out of them.
Tyres - Conti or Mich - Gazza
Oops, I just checked it and it is indeed G'year NCT2.

Must be good, same tyre was fitted my old Mitsubishi Gallant in 1988 and same car has just had new ones fitted (yes I know they are worth more than the car but that small area that keeps the car on the road is all that matters).

I switched from Conti to Michelin (196/65 R15) on my Passat Estate and IMO the Michelins are na bit grippier in the wet, no better or worse in the dry and no quieter. They do seem to wear a bit better than the Contis - I've just replaced the fronts at 22k and the rears aren't half worn yet.

Have recently put Conti Premium Contacts on my Mazda 626 to replace Semperits which were on it when I bought the car. The tyres are much quieter and give good grip and 'feel' at the wheel. I drove M4,M25 and A12 in very heavy rain yesterday and they felt very sure-footed. However, I think tyres can be a bit 'car specific' so I would hesitate to recommend them unreservedly for a different model. My tyre size is 195/65 R14 and I had a job obtaining them.

I was so disatisfied with the Dunlop Sport tyres(noisy, poor grip) on my Honda Civic that I have just replaced them with Conti Premium Contacts. So far very inpressed but I haven't done a great deal of miles yet.

Folks,

FWIW I discussed tyre choice for the fronts on the XM with my local long-established fitting centre, Derek Campbell of Yarm. (No pot-plants, big posters, or spotty youths there)

Apparently, (and allegedly) Michelin have recently had to revise both compound and tread pattern on some of their products due to "problems".

My choice? I used to use "Stunner" tyres on my Pug 405 with no problems whatsoever, and have decided to do the same with the XM. I will do well to get anything above 20K out of the fronts on XM anyway, so this is a bit of an experiment. There is still some life in the rears, so if I encounter any problems, I could always do a front/rear swap. And, yes, I did ask them about putting the new ones on the back, and the mid-life Michelins on the front but they advised against it.

I have done a fair bit of internet trawling on this topic, and cannot seem to get a pattern or experience pointing to a particular make with a particular car. Like Dizzy, I am sure that certain makes suit certain cars, but even among XM owners, I can't get a consistent picture.

And if the XM is going to eat tyres, and the difference with a "big name" make is marginal, I would rather that it ate them at £50/corner than £70/corner.

www.mytyres.net provide test data on most tyres. I've only put three headings. They actual score on 9 criteria.

Where 6 is worst and 1 is best:

Conti Premium Contact
Noise in car 2.5
Grip Dry (Wet) 1.6 (1.7)
Wear 3.0
OVERALL (all 9 criteria) 2.0

Mich Pilot Primacy
Noise in car 2.5
Grip Dry (Wet) 1.2 (1.8)
Wear 2.0
OVERALL (all 9 criteria) 1.8

Bridge RE 88
Noise in car 3.0
Grip Dry (Wet) 3.0 (6.0)
Wear 6.0
OVERALL (all 9 criteria) 4.1

So anything will be an improvement on the Bridgestone!

With respect, no dosh, had a look at the "test data" and must point out that those results are evaluated from user opinions and not official test reports and in the case of the RE88's scores are based on just one buyers experience.I find them ok on my sons Galant but then that is my opinion alone.

Oooops, fell into the trap. Fair point Mal. Just had another look at the test results and you're spot-on.

Wonder where you can get lab data on tyres? Must have a rummage around on Google.

I've had both on my Saab 9-5, in the same size & speed rating as yours. I found the Contis obtrusively noisy, so when they needed replacing I wrote to Saab asking their opinion with regard to Michelins & Contis. They replied stating that the Michelins might be a little quieter. When I first fitted them, the car seemed sharper & more on its toes, but I felt that whilst the ride had deteriorated, the Michelins were indeed quieter. *But*, now they are half worn, the Michelins seem to be getting noisier, a phenomenon I've heard mentioned before. Wet and dry grip seems comparable on both. So no clear cut answer!

There seems to be a common thread here that different tyres suit different cars, wht not try as I did and write to Nissan asking for their comments & recommendations?

If you can get them in the right size, go for the new Bridgestone RE720. Directional tread pattern and all the tests carried out rate them very highly. I'm going to replace my RE88s with them when the time comes as they appear very competitively priced.

A bit more on the tyres: reviews at www.tyres-online.co.uk/tyretest/tests.asp

(Continental rated as excellent, Michelin as average, Bridgestone as excellent)

....but remember that the tyre reviews haven't been updated for a couple of years. This is very out-of-date information, although still useful.

Anyone got any experience of these tyres on a Volvo S80? I have recently acquired a 1999V S80 which has BOTH fitted - Mich Pilot Primacy on the front, Conti EcoContact CP on the rear, both 215/55 R16. Difficult therefore for me to tell which is performing the best! Have to say though that the ride is better than my old BX on which I always fitted Michelins.

Any ideas on which I should replace first?

RE720 does not have my size, they only go upto profile-60, I need 205/65.
