Apparently Renault are dropping rumours it will start from £6995.

Stunning value if true.

I am dissapointed I have ordered a Duster, woud have prefered the Logan estate!

Rumours abound WV are in mid development of their budget brand, Fiat have a team started on developing their budget brand, Nissan are re-considering Datsun and great wall and Geely are slowing down their plans for UK expansion to re-consider their stratergy.

I hope they dont forget, its not purely about cheapening a car, but much more about providing a reliable, solid, simple form of transport albeit sparce on kit.

Does anyone expect those brands the like of Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, etc who have tried to move up market will ever regret leaving the budget area where they previously succeeded?

Not a bit. The margins on premium cars are much larger. Since the fixed costs of making a car are higher than they used to be, making a profit on a budget car is very, very hard.

Budget brands exist largely as a means of quietly outsourcing production to areas where labour costs are lower without incurring the wrath of politicians or unions.

Who are the budget brands?

Dacia, perodua, proton, great wall. I cant think of any more.

Daihatsu have gone, mitsubishi are not really budget anymore, hyundai and kia have moved on up.

Any others?

Seat and Skoda (although Skoda has moved upmarket)

are suzuki still budget?

are skoda really budget or just budget compared to the rest of the VAG range?

I though chevrolet where trying to portrait themselves as mainstream and not budget?

Skoda aren't really budget, but Seat are perceived to be.

Chevrolet started off as rebadged Daewoos. There's probably too much overlap with Opel, and Opel/Vauxhall surely can't survive the 'world car' rationalisation for much longer.

I cant believe the prices being asked for the chevy orlando, which is practically the old zafira.

The same can be said for the latest aveo which is a good little car, but way over priced.

Such pricing tells me chevy dont see themselves as a budget brand.

The Dacia Logan is an old model. I drove one about four years ago as a rental overseas and it was fairly poor. Not something to get excited about.

[edit] I was talking about the old model, not the one at ths motor show.

There's a flood of cheap Chinese stuff on the way.

I miss Daihatsu. Cheap, but build quality second to none and legendary for reliability. That's the way it should be done.

Im not so sure, both geely and great wall have put their UK expansion plans on to slow in recent months.
