The 1977 original 911 Turbo had only four gears compared to five the standard 911. The reason - there was so much torque the car didn't need five gears and the bigger gears could cope better with the increased torque.

Nowadays the torque band is supposedly so flat above 1,500rpm that we simply don't need six gears let alone seven or eight. The whole point of torque converter automatics is that you don't need so may gears, so why have them?

Doh!

It might be a case of putting a positive spin on a design shortcoming. ZF have replaced some of the clutch bands with dog clutches. Dog clutches don't permit slip. In order to make clean changes, some of the ratios must be close together. the ZF spokesman hints as much when he boasts about the ability to make "multiple shifts", or skip-shifting to the rest of us. Of course the only reason that skip shifting is necesary is because the ratios are so close.

So the gearbox hardware does change for more gears? I thought that software determines the amount of speeds in a conventional automatic these days.

Personally I think they're all trying to outdo eachother over this as an "exec-sports" "feature". It reminds me of the razor blade manufacturers thinking that adding extra blades (above two total) makes and enormous difference to the result - they don't, they just make the items much more expensive, which is really why they all do it (same with "new improved" washing powders/liquids, etc, etc).

R&D isn't in my view as "cutting edge" in business as they like to make out - all too often they like to be "safe" to keep profits up. My Mazda3 is a good example - the 2004-06 1.6 litre petrol model still exists in the latest version, but has been derated twice (06 facelift and 09/10 "new" model) to get lower Co2 groups (to save about £30 a year -wooo!) but at the expense of power delivery (they need to be thrashed now and are the equivalent of many previous models' 1.4 petrol in terms of performance): 0-60 now is 12.2 sec instead of 11.4 sec, which often means you use more fuel (despite the so-called upping of the mpg from 39 to 42) to make progress.

The classic Onion article summarises this neatly:

I had to use tinyURL because the HJ swear filter breaks the main URL.

Bobbin can tell you I am a three speed automatic. A throwback. Literally.

They dont make em like they used to.

Haha :) one of the Onion's all-time classics.

The real irony is that the article was written BEFORE Gillette introduced their 5-blade razor. It tickles me to think that a Gillette exec read the article and thought "hang on, that's not a bad idea ...."

Is it a CVT with nine steps, a bit like A-class had?

Life imitating art. I bet the CEO of Gilette isn't that much different!

During the late 1960s in Zambia I owned a Ford Prefect that I used to go into work and back (of course). It started via a handle - easily, by the way. I had a three speed gearbox and the gears were so low that I was able to put it into top gear within 50 yds (from cold). I could run into work like that, down to 5 mph round corners if I slipped the clutch a bit. It was a very relaxing car to drive.

It was the 1950s pattern with transverse leaf spring front suspension and the shock absorbers were non-existant, so the spring broke several times while I owned it. I dismantled it and had the spring welded at the local engineering works. Every time it was welded it shortened fractionally and to refit it I had the whole family to sit on the bonnet to flatten the spring before I could slide in the pins.

I taught my wife's friend to drive in it. She was very nervous and thought that the aeroplane shaped handle at the front that secured the bonnet was pointing the wrong way and was a distraction, so I adjusted it for her so that it looked as though it was pointing straight down the road.

My parents' Austin A40 in the early 50s was well ahead of the 3-speed Ford and Vauxhall equivalents, as it had four forward gears, independent front suspension, and the ability to start in the morning.

Fords of that era didn't like the cold and the wet, which would explain why Hillman's Prefect was no trouble in Zambia, even though in the latew 60s it must have been elderly.

Did you ever have a Hillman, Hillman? The ones I remember always seemed to have an engine one size too small for the car.

...or maybe they have, and that's why they decided to fit a conventional gearbox with more gears instead.

CVT gearbox = Astronaut food.

I mamage with 24 gears on my push bike, makes hill climbing much easier than the 18 gear bike it replaced.

Who on earth needs a car with nine gears?

One of those modern, small capacity, high boost turbodiesels with the now de rigeur "blink and you missed it" power band?

I've often wondered why they don't just remove the engine and have the driver row the thing around with the gear lever. It'd probably be less effort.

What engine is that then? Tried the VAG 1.4 petrol turbo (122ps) and it was delightful, flat torque curve, better than a diesel in all honesty.

The new Ford 1.0 Ecoboost (or whatever they call it) looks even better, flat torque from about 1500 to 5000, in the Fiesta all the journ's have agreed the engine is so flexible the lack of a 6th gear is not an issue even with the high 5th.
