Irregardless of whether the story is true or not, look at the facts.
1. Modern VWs can be swapped between miles/km, by the user only if the car has a full "maxidot" type computer display , the odometer then reads xxxxx km instead of yyyyy ml.
2. The MOT tester will not change his certificate, which states it is the mileage. The OP will have to prove he was negligent in not noticing the km indicator. (VOSA or court)
3. The dealer was negligent in not noticing the above discrepancy and by not declaring this at point of sale maybe this is an illegal or fradulent sale. Again it is up to the OP to prove this.
4. As it stands your car has documentaion showing it has probably been clocked (as far as a buyer is concerned
5. Even with a VW diagnostic report to back up the story (mileage correction data) I think most buyers would just walk away, or even report you for clocking after a sale.
the OP should seek a substantial discount as the documentation devalues the car to one that has 120k+ miles and no service history to back it up.
The OP should contact the previous owner and ask for his version of the story, assuming he speaks english....
