We're off to Florida and I am a little confused about insurance requirements. Last time they tried to sell me collision damage waiver but I was told later it wasn't needed. Do we need this extra insurance? I also understand that returned cars are scrutinised for damge and as thery have your credit cars can merrily charge you for any perceived scratches , dents etc.

If you are prepared to pay the excess on the poicy then you don't "Need" the cover. I have just paid £17 for 7 days such insurance for Portugal, to cover an €800 excess. You are correct about the inspection - do NOT return the car without having it inspected and signed for, otherwise you are likely to get a bill weeks letter for damage. Pays to take plenty of photos of the car, in your own interests. Easy with a cameraphone too!

Good advice

Don't forget that an international driving permit www.theaa.com/getaway/idp/index.html is mandatory in Florida. Caught without one and you have a choice of jail time or manadtory court appearance - I kid you not!

Also don't park with the passenger door facing the road. Got stung with a ticket for that one once!

Not any more it isn't

15 February 2013: Further update: It's confirmed an IDP is NOT required for car rentals in Florida if your license is in English

As per the news and advise from both the FCO and ABTA, the new law introduced in Florida has now been deferred, and customers no longer need to purchase an international drivers permit in order to drive a car in Florida if your license is in English. Please see below information as per the FCO website today.

"The State of Florida has suspended enforcement of a recently introduced driving law requiring non-resident drivers to be in possession of an International Driving Permit and a UK driving licence. Following the change, a valid UK driving licence, or licence issued by another foreign government or US State, is the only requirement for driving a car in Florida."

We will continue to closely monitor the situation, and in the event that this law is re-introduced at a further date, will again advise accordingly with as much notice as possible.

If you have to hire a car, the US is one of those destinations where it's worth biting the bullet and buying the full (super) Collison Damage Waiver. They will try to catch you for anything otherwise - not just the obvious body/wheel/screen damage, but even a scuff inside the boot (trunk!) or mark on the seats.

It' is all just so painful that it put us off travelling there. You have the charade of the airport desk trying to get you to upgrade to a bigger car, as well as trying to sell you stuff that's already covered on your travel insurance (medical/luggage type items) - all just wearing. Last time we went, we refused the chance to upgrade from a 'mid-size' car (Mondeo/Avensis/Passat size) but then got told they only had a Dodge something or other (Durango?) left, which of course we had to be given at no extra cost - it was a monstrous 7 seater SUV with a fuel consumption in the 15/20 MPG range.

Best advice is to buy whatever you can here first e,g, the Super CDW.

fuel consumption in the 15/20 MPG range.

Don't forget that US gal = UK gal x 1.2

So 20 USmpg = 24 UKmpg

Err no. I UK gallon = 1.2 US gallon.

But the second line is correct.

When I was in California/Arizona/Nevada I was told to pull 'the levver' to start the petrol pump after inserting my credit car. After 5 minutes searching I went to ask where the "levver" was.

It was the surrounding bit around where the nozzle was replaced. And IIRC there was a convenient manual trigger lock to prevent me getting hand cramp.

The last time I went to Florida I purchased the super CDW here in the UK before travelling to the USA, it was a few years ago so matters may have changed. I recall using an independant specialist selling the cover in the UK specifically for traveller.

The advantage was certainty about cost and cover not a rushed review of the policy whilst tired and jet lagged on arrival at the car hire desk.

Another bit of high pressure salemanship on this matter, raised by Smileyman, is that the USA companies may try to force you to buy their product, on the basis that they don't accept the one you have bought. This a nonsense, of course. If you damage their car they will charge you the XS and this is then a matter between you and the provider of your CDW insurance, whoever it is.

I took out 12 months insurance for about £48 with these guys..

https://www.questor-insurance.co.uk/buy-insurance/hire-car-hire-excess.aspx

They seem to insure everything and when i showed the hire company it was accepted without question.

I am not affiliated with the above company and post on here often.

One other thing worth mentioning is that the black pump was petrol and the green pump was diesel! Exactly opposite to the UK. So check carefully.

You also have to prepay for your fuel over there.I tried using a credit card in the pump but it wanted me to enter a zip code.I even tried entering our friends zip code who live there but it didn't work.I ended up having to go in and pay $20 up front.

When i was taking the hire car back i had to return it totally full.

When i got to the gas station i wondered how i was suppose to know how much fuel i needed on the prepay. When i asked inside they said i had to pay them $50 up front(with a receipt),pump the gas i needed till full and then go back into the shop to get a refund on any remaining credit.

So much easier in the UK!.

Is it still a case that in Oregon you are not allowed to pump your own gas?

CDW is thrown in free with some credit and charge cards. Check you are not already covered in this way before you pay anymore. Indeed check to see if you can get such a card cheaply.

Am now returned from said trip and the car was hired from 'Dollar'. A Chrysler Town and Country which was excellent. I only took the basic insurance and it was fine. As someone else said fuel is prepaid but that was no problem. I was a little concerned that on returning the car something would be wrong and they would try to charge me but handover was easy.....'.leave it there and thanks for using Dollar.' We had a a deal which didn't require the tank to have fuel in it on return. All in all painless, traffic lights take ages but it must be worse for the Yanks when they first meet a roundabout over here.
