Query about my service - hoyak

Hi,

I took my car in for a service and as it is a garage I have used several times did not ask for quotes ETC.

They have replaced 3 bulbs and put two new wipers on and charged me over £55 when you add VAT. Is this reasonable? I have two of the bulbs here already that I was planning on doing this weekend which is annoying.

Also, they have charged £120 for labour when previous services were charged at £60 plus parts. What they have done extra is change the brake fluid and replaced both lights at the front on the side plus a numberplate light.

What do you think? I think £280 is too expensive and I wish I had queried at the time but didn't want to cause a scene. Disappointing as well as I always use this garage and have actually travelled to use them now as I have changed jobs.

Basically, my main question is can they just replace things such as wipers and lights and charge without asking? And also, is an hour to replace the headlights and brake fluid reasonable? I have looked online and the fluid is changed by machine!

Thanks

You have not stated the make/model/year of car in question, but some what would seem simple jobs can be very labour intensive on a modern vehicle. The £280 charged for what you have done does not seem out the way to me.Perhaps the garage should have advised about the cost of bulb replacement if the job was involved. As for the brake fluid change, yes they probably did use a machine, which is standard practice, but there is still amount of human labour involved, including bleeding the brake hydraulic system.hth

If the car had come back from service with 3 blown bulbs it would hardly have been a service would it, if you wanted to do simple jobs like bulbs (not always as simple as they should be) or wipers you really should have completed those jobs yourself before leaving the car with them or advised them that you were aware but didn't want the jobs doing, i would have changed those parts without referral too.

As above poster depending on the car involved the price sounds about right for a full service, presumably incl brake strip clean and lube as fuid replaced.

To put it in context workmate had MB recently serviced @ £2k.

If this is about your Focus which you posted about last month, it's a good thing you haven't carried out your intention to change to a Mercedes SLK !

Strikes me as fairly reasonable.

Brake fluid changed by machine eh? Clever kit that!
You any idea how much good tools cost? Gotta be paid for.

Do you really expect a garage to hand a car back to a client in an unroadworthy condition? That's what they'd have done if they'd given it you back with lights not working and knackered wipers!!

You should have been clearer up front about your expectations.

When you took the car in did you tell the service agent what what you expected to be done?

Next time tell then to do the service as per the book, (agree how much this will cost) and nothing more without your explicit agreement in advance - and make sure they have your telephone number (mobile?) so they can contact you and ask you if any extra works are identified.

Be aware not all drivers are able to change blown lamps and the garage would be doing you a massive dis-service to return the vehicle in an illegal state, unless instructed by you.

>>Be aware not all drivers are able to change blown lamps

I've met some drivers that seem not able to change gear.

Difficult to be exact without make/model and your location (London is more expensive than Middlesbrough). I'd pay around that sum at my Citroen specialist in Northampton for a major service - most cars have some sort of pattern where intermediate services are not much more than an oil/filter change.

I'd also expect bulbs and wipers to be changed and charged at retail parts and book/actual time.
