MOT - Advisory explanation on tyres? - cws

Going to look at a car tomorrow, and the last MOT has the following advisory (from 11months ago):

225/45/17. OF 5 OR 4 NR 3 NF 4mm.

Thanks-in-advance.

Maybe I've got a brain blockage, but what is the question?

Looks to me like an abbreviation of the relevent tyre tread depths.

OF = offside front etc.

not a bad tyre size for selection and price.

I understand the first one is the tyre size! I now understand what the letters mean (thanks gordonbennet).

What I still need to establish is which of those tyre depth measurements are close to the legal minimum?

Buy yourself a tread depth gauge and check them properly, those figures are from 11 months ago.

My tyres do not get below 3mm before changing and often before that.

225/45/17. OF 5 OR 4 NR 3 NF 4mm

OF 5 - offside front tyre 5mm - the front tyre on the driver's side of the car is the offside front.

OR 4 - offside rear tyre 4mm - the rear tyre on the driver's side of the car is the offside rear.

NR 3 - nearside rear tyre 3mm - the rear tyre on the kerb side of the car is the nearside rear. (NB: this one is closest to the legal limit, see below for further details)

NF 4 - nearside front tyre 4mm - the front tyre on the kerb side of the car is the nearside front.

The link below explains the UK Tyre Law legal limits:
http://www.ctyres.co.uk/tyre_info/tyre_law.html

As gordon says, check the actual tyres on the car with your own tyre gauge.

Are these tyres still fitted to the car from 11 months ago?

I'm not sure if they are the same tyres, but I'll be going armed with a tread depth tool.

Thanks for your replies everyone!

I'm not sure if they are the same tyres,

Am I reading this correct. You seriously don't know if they are the same tyres as last year, why. Might someone other than yourself have swapped them.

No-one has mentioned the minimum legal is 1.6mm.;however as already said,it's better to change at 3.0mm..

MOT - Advisory explanation on tyres? - Cyd

Yes, that is a very popular size. Blackcircles have Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2s available in that size for about £115 each at the moment. These will be my choice of tyre for my car in a couple of months (same size too).

Although it's been mentioned that the recommended change point is 3mm, the reason is that below this as the tread depth approaches the legal min of 1.6, the wet performance drops of markedly and the danger of aquaplaning increases as the tyres ability to shift water falls off.

New tyres usually start off with about 8mm tread, so you have 5 to 6.4 useable tread depth.

Huge amount of tread left on them tyres, why would they advise him that his tyres were half way worn I wonder.

If I went for an MOT somewhere where they mixed up performing an MOT test with some worry, confusion and ofuscation for the sake of selling tyres to someone who doesn't need them I'd go somewhere else.

They are clearly using the legal status of the MOT test to scare people. Very dodgy indeed.

They couldn't find anything else to write in the advisories box?
