toyota estima lucida - help with upgrading tyres and dump valve. - daddyandy5

Hi I have a lucida 2.2 td 4wd. It currently has 16 Inch rims and I want to upgrade to tyres from the 205/65/16. Was looking at the all terrain tyres currently looking at 235 70 16 does anyone know if these will fit ok. I tried Google to see if anyone else has but nothing. Some advice would be great thanks. Oh any chance any one knows of a dump valve that I can put on too? I seen one with a subaru dump valve?

You don't put dump valves on diesels because there's no reason to dump the boost when you lift off!

I appreciate your feedback each to their own opinion but I was told I helps preserve the life of the turbo ans if im honest I like the sound. I dont have a normal lucida. It is kitted and tinted and all I was after was a bit of advise on tyres really. Just thought I would ask as I have seen them with dump valves on.

They are necessary to preserve the life of turbos on petrol engines because they would surge when the throttle is closed. Since there is little air throttling on a diesel, they are completely redundant. You don't have any manifold vacuum to operate the dump valve, Even if you found a way to operate the dump valve, you'll just creaate unnecessary turbo lag-and look foolish!

If he drives a fully kitted out Toyota Estima Lucida I don't honestly think he will to be worried about looking foolish (or more foolish).

Not all of us, I hope.

You could fit square wheels too as well as a dump valve to a diesel, that would look propa sick innit.

We didn't even mention the problems of lack of grip from fitting all terrain tyres, the gearing difference of the different size or the insurance implications.

I think one of the best indicators of foolishness is a sign in the back window that says "little princess on board".

Welcome to the forum.

As moderator I'm keen that we don't slap new members down and put them off - but in this case Unthrottled, who knows a lot about engineering, has given you straightforward answers to your question on dump valves without criticising you.

With regard to tyres, check very carefully that a different size actually fits (wheelarch and brakes) and also ensure that it won't invalidate your insurance. I think the Lucida was an imported model which wasn't on general sale in the UK (although similar to the Previa wasn't it?), so not many of us are experts on it.

The air intake on a diesel is not throttled. Power is controlled by varying the fuel delivery rate. Hence there is no excess boost to dump.

The tyres you mention will significantly increase the rolling radius and thus you will end up with the speedo under reading wildly - which would be illegal and unwise given the presence of speed scameras. You need to find tyres with the same radius. 235/70/15s might do it, but the 15 inch rims may not fit over your brakes.

Hi I think the idea was fitting it to the wastegate. So yes probably ppretty pointless but like I said if im honest I like the sound. I know alot of people dont like them think they sound silly and people look silly driving them but thats their opinion and im not fussed.

On the other hand with the tyres I may just stick with what I haveif it might effect my insurance. Thankyou for the advice. I just aassumed all terrain tyres would give better grip and living on a bit of a muddy slope thought it would just make it less work for the van. Thanks again

It's not the all terrain tha will give you a problem, but the change in size you are proposing. Change to tyres the same size.
