Looking to purchase car with 6k need some help - gramfin
I am looking to purchase a car in the next few weeks. My budget is 6k. I will be doing 10k miles per year. Previous car was a Saab 95 estate which I loved. It was all leather and had lots of gadgets but unfortunately the mpg was brutal. I have no need for an estate now. It will be mainly me and my other half in the car, I will have two kids out in it occasionally but not more than once a week. I tend to do a lot of short journeys locally. I am hoping for something that is fun to drive and has a sporty feel/look. I have Been looking at some Audi TTs and whilst I like the look of them they don't seem very reliable which is something I need.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks

Gram

You can't put two children in a TT. I have watched a lady try this. They weren't happy. Also they are expensive to run.

If you want fun for £6k, you could do a lot worse than a Mazda 2.

If you're after a sporty looking car that's pretty smooth, a 2006 VW Eos 2.0 FSI convertible can be had for £6k, and two people can sit in the back of that.

AVoid the Hyundai Coupe though - they can fit 4 people in but they are mediocre to drive and the VED and mpg are absurd, although the trim and looks are very nice indeed.

I see what you mean about the back seats on a TT. I had also not considered the Mazda and here it looks like a cracking wee car.

Any more suggestions welcomed.

I have also been looking at the Honda Civic, what is the best version of this to go for?

For fun? I don't think any of the newer ones! The 2000-2005 Civics get a good write up - the Type R goes like the clappers but it'll be pricey to run.

The Eos would be ok but pretty heavy with that metal roof, therefore making it not the most sporty of rides.

In my opinion a better but very similar option is the Audi A4 cabriolet. We've just sold our front wheel drive 2.0tdi which was sporty to drive, economical at around 40mpg average, and the boot is huge for such a car. It'll have more toys than the Eos too and with plenty about winter is a good time to have one. Ours was S-line spec which I'd avoid as too harsh a ride, though leather, bose etc was good.

I used winter tyres on it and it out easily performed a friend's subaru legacy with standard tyres in the snow.

Otherwise for a hatchback look at the Seat Leon FR diesel - same as the Golf but those are expensive for what they are.

10k miles a year isn't so much and you'll get much more car for the money if you go petrol - don't be fooled by mpg figures, petrol is cheaper so count on adding 5mpg when comparing to a diesel.
