Kia Magentis - Crankshaft Pulley replacement - pinheadplanet

Hi

What could be the cause of a crankshaft pulley needing replacement (along with the belt), it had a bit of a wobble on it.

Cheers

The crankshaft pulley will also be a harmonic balancer. There have been a few issues with V6 engines concerning this, if it gets bad you get squealing, lose power steering etc and the crank bolt can actually shear off and cause lots of damage. The bolt is single use despite what others may say and must also be replaced and correctly torqued. I believe there is an updated part availabe from Kia. I dont have any more depth of info im afraid, but catch it soon and there is very little risk of further damage.

I take it replacing the pulley is something different to replacing the bolt?

Yes its a different thing, however if the pulley has to come off for any reason, timing belt replacement for example, the bolt must be renewed...In your case though, if the pulley has become damaged or started to seperate and wobble, it can put undue loads on the bolt, thereby causing it to fail anyway.

On another post they were in a quandary as whether to buy a Magentis that had exactly the same problem.A friend who was waiting for new parts for his Hyundai with the same 2.7 engine when the pulley was replaced the engine lasted only a few kilometers before it went into self destruct mode also taking out the autobox repair costs will run into thousands. The conclusion if it needs a new pulley then it appears it is not just the matter of exchanging the part but great care must be taken in making sure it is balanced as well.

Lots of problems with this engine on the Hyundai Coupe forums all of which seem to be the result of the same problem with the engine out of balance.

Its a strange problem really, sometimes appearing after work involving the timing belt. Could be the reuse of the bolt, or an innapropriate way of removing the pulley causing damage to it. There is of course a known problem with the pulley but early replacement will sort it. There was a similar problem with the 4cyl 1.1 I think aswell.

The pulley and sprocket are both keyed to one another and the to crank so balance 'shouldnt' be an issue, if a new pulley is used it must be a genuine piece which will be correctly balanced of course.

A Kia or Hyundai dealer is the best person to ask about this problem though, especially if it is still under 7 year warranty.
