The HDI will rarely bring on the glow plug light, unlike the old style diesels.

Have you tried a new battery just to rule it out?

Thanks for the reply pal.Looks like it has the wrong battery fitted.which would, i guess probably explain the slow turnover. Its fitted with a bosch s4 battery and halfords car checker says it should be a bosch s5.

Scratch the above.Had the battery drop tested at bullseye all is good.Still refusing to start when cold,It just seems like its not turning over fast enough, starts straight away with the jump leads, and when warm.My neighbour seems to think the alternator belt is on too tight, could this be a reason ( i remain doubtfull)

The glow plug light is coming on now the temps have dropped just bellow zero.

The van is a 2004 model and is high on miles at 170k.Anyone got any ideas?

It hasn't been filled with thick oil, has it? Most modern engines take a 5W/30. Has the previous owner used a thicker oil, maybe due to ignorance or just putting in what he'd got? I like to use a 0w/40 in winter, but I must admit I didn't get around to changing it before the cold weather struck. Anyway, just a thought. Suppose the oil would have to be quite heavy to make that much of a difference.

Its most likely either the battery or you have a bad battery/earth connection that the jump leads are disguising.

Too thick oil could be an issue, worth checking.

If the battery is to small it still won't turn over fast enough even if it does read OK. Try jumping it with another one.

Right i have now swapped the battery over from our other car which is a mitsubishi carisma diesel. But will have to wait untill morning as i had the van running earlier(from jump leads). Will report back.If still same i will change the oil and filter over the weekend. If that still doesnt cure it i will get a new uprated started motor fitted as i have read on another forum that peugeot only fitted the van with a 1.4kw starter and problems can arise with this on higher mileage cars. The uprated ones are either 1.7kw or 2kw.

Just wanted to say thanks for the replys and hopefully i will get to the bottom of the problem and it may help someone else in the same position.

Right i can now rule out the battery as a possible. It did start this morning but only just, and i suspect had it been a little colder it would not have started.I have got some new oil 5w30,and will put this in tomorrow.I have to say though i think its all pointing to the starter motor.

Cheers Giner.

I WILL BET YOU BOTTOM DOLLAR IF YOU TAKE THE TOP COVER OFF IN THE ENGINE AND POUR HOT WATER OVER THE FUEL FILTER THE CAR WILL START FIRST TIME AS I HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE FOR 3 WINTERS NOW,THE DIESEL TURNS SLUSHY AND PREVENTS THE CAR FROM STARTING,PLEASE LET ME KNOW BUT THIS IS FACT I AM STILL DOING IT WITH MY VAN THIS WINTER,ONCE STARTED THEN IT WILL START ALL DAY AFTER WARDS

Have you found out what the problem was? Was it the starter motor?
