Mercedes clk 270 cdi - Pre 2004 mercedes diagnostics - raginbull

Hi, is there anybody out there that has ever used a hand held DIY diagnostic tool on a 2003 mercedes diesel. I'm looking for one but I don't want to spend money on something that doesn't work. The car has the OBD 16 pin socket but I'm not sure what protocol it is. Also where can I find information about sensor positions?
