If it were me i'd find a good independent VW group specialist indy of long standing, and ask them.

You should be able to find recommendations for one or two in your area by reading and possibly joining an independent VW group forum...a few minutes spent reading online should find you a good forum.

You might find a good used engine from an accident damaged car is a better easier and cheaper bet, but the indy will know his game...is yours not rebuildable?

The man at the garage said some thing about a chain at the back of the engine going and doing lots of damage and would be cheaper to put an other engine in.

I'm assuming timing chain failure.

It might be cheaper to put another engine in, i doubt if a *properly* overhauled or reconditioned engine would be the cheapest option.

Either way this question is best answered by a VAG indy.

Without removing the head or at least using a camera in the cylinders the garage can not evaluate the damage. There is a cam drive chain at the rear of the head. A refurbed head would be a cheaper way forward if the pistons are OK. Post on .vwforum.co.uk

A genuine exchange unit base engine is about £3500 inc VAT and an exchange head about £1800 plus a huge pile of bits to fit it so the base engine is good value.
