Chris Evans noted the 5 main issues he remembered from his speeding-enforced attendance this morning. Did anyone hear them soon after 7.30? Comments?

Yes, I missed that, too. You can listen to the programme again on bbc iplayer on the internetty. I think it needs to be said that the courses are only available to those who've committed minor infringement of a speed limit. More serious cases go to court and people (who could well do with some extra training) just get points/bans/fines. THe courses do seem to be well received, under suffrance, though, I suppose. However, they do seem to be lacking in one important element, and that is to have every driver on the course undergo an assessment / observation session. In that way, the course providers can demonstrate how to put the classroom stuff into the real world and are surely more likely to have a positive - longer term - impact on the drivers.

My Brother went on one and the main messge rammed home was a real-life case study of someone on the A13 doing 50 in a 40 zone at 2 in the a.m. and someone who was completely drunk staggered out in front of his car and was knocked down dead.

Because the guy was 'speeding' he got 5 years for causing death by dangerous driving - which is hardly fair really as the drunk was mostly to blame - but that was kind of the point, to ram home the message that If you speed you run the risk of being being found at fault whatever the true circumstances.

NB that is was not the issue that had he not been speeding he might have avoided the drunk if he'd been doing 40 - the prosecution were under no obligation to prove that

Towards the end of the one I did in East Sussex, driving instructors appeared with cars and we had to do just that. It was set up for 2 of us per car, so we both got quite a long drive. They chose routes where you had to have your wits about you to work out what the speed limits were.
