VW Passat 2003 TDI 130bhp Sport - 65,000 miles/FSH - Cold starting problems - reevers

Hi!

My first post and am hoping someone out there can help me!!

My Passat had difficulties starting in the cold last year. It sounded rough, smoked more for the first 10secs or so but otherwise ran well and started OK in warmer temps.Car has just passed MOT and runs well with good mpg.

The problem has returned with the colder weather. Some forums talk about temp sensors on the radiator? I am reluctant to take it to VW as they will no doubt start by replacing high value items first.

If anyone has had similar problems or knows of a possible cure, I would be grateful.

Cheers!

Maybe get the fault coddes read by an independent VAG specialist?

Perhaps a dodgy glow plug or electrical connection to the glow plugs, if the problem is restricted to starting when pre-glow is required? Could you check the plugs and perhaps replace them, after checking they are receiving power during a cold start?

Many thanks for reply. Had an independent garage undertake a VAG diagnostic test. No faults showed up! Appreciate your input to date - happy motoring.

Have the glow plugs replaced, cheap and easy to do.

Thanks Crasher.

Will get the car sorted this week. Hopefully it will be repaired before the real cold weather.

Will keep you posted on progress. Anyone with other ideas would be welcome.

Thanks all!
