BMW X3 - Driving on Cruise Control - nantgaredig

Is it safe to control a car by using the speed adjust button on cruise rather than the accelerator? I'd say "no" but I am told "yes", how can this be so, especially in heavy traffic?

Definately "no". It's a mechanism for adjusting the cruise speed, not a hand throttle. In order to be usable to drive the vehicle in traffic, it would have to be progressive and controllable across the full range, like the throttle pedal, not a simple "dab for 2mph faster / slower".

I very rarely use the speed adjust as suspend, a period of manual control and then resume is almost always more appropriate.

Not recommended in heavy traffic, though if the X3 has a speed limiter that can be useful and contribute to using less fuel.

On another forum I visit on poster was a firm believer in using CC in town. He got plenty of grief, eventually they made him a moderator.

I would think adaptive CC would work?

I rarly use CC were i drive, but think ACC would maybe work.

Using the speed increase/decrease button on a xtrail i find very crude, but it does work.

Never tried it and cannot see need in UK other than as an 'autopilot' for speed limits

Last car I drove where keeping my foot on accelerator was uncomfortable was an Issigonis Mini.

Its OK to adjust your cruising speed up and down on CC, but like the others i don't like CC when in close proximity to other traffic likely to vary their speed, prefer keeping distance etc in the normal way where all senses are alert.
