New golf - Poor engine - tony g
Just reading through details of the new golf on H J .

The entry level model is a a 1.2 TSI ,is this basically the same 3 cylinder engine that was popular in the polo from approx 2005 up to now .

I've sold a few of those and although they are a popular seller ,I always found them to be a nasty little car to drive ,with a poor reliability record .

I remember one where the timing chain slipped a notch and threw the timing out .Very expensive to repair.

The 1.2 petrol engine used in VW is 4 cylinder produce in the Skoda plant of all aluminium construction I believe.

The 1.2 3 cylinder in the Polo is an hateful little device, all vibration and no go. Made from aluminium.

The 1.2 TSi used in the Golf is a 4 cylinder unit in which the block is made of cast iron.

Totally different units.

But according to VW and Wikipedia the new engine is as stated above 4 cylinder and all aluminium the old engine had a cast iron block.Maybe the UK does not get the newest engine.

The 60 bhp is the old 3 pot port injected engine that is still offered as a base option in order to flatter the rest of the range.

Thankfully the new 1.2 features the one useful feature of the 1.2 htp engine-the 2 valve head.

Don't know where you guys get your info from but the new Golf 7 brochure on the VW site shows the base engine to be the 85bhp 4 pot 1.2 Tsi turbo engine. A smashing little engine, even in its downrated form, often produces far more than its rated power and has diesel levels of torque (160Nm over 1400-3500rpm) and has world leading economy for a petrol engine (113 g/km 47.9mpg URBAN figure) AND its smooth and quiet.

In 105bhp guise, on other forums, the standard engines have regularly dyno tested above 120bhp.

I would be a bit skeptical about the claims over fuel economy of the small petrol trubo engines - many people, both on this forum (through the "Real MPG" part of the site as well) and elsewhere have been finding that they cannot achieve anywhere near the high mpg figures quoted by the manufacturers - not that much better than the equivalnet powered normally-aspirated petrol engined versions.

Any (possibly small) in mpg are more than offset by the higher purchase price of the vehicle and repairs should the (more complex) vehicle go wrong. There is something to be said for keeping the designs reasonably simple.

You can't keep designs simple while the powers that be consider CO2 (the stuff that makes plants grow) to be a pollutant. We are all paying through the nose for the biggest tax and spend scam in history.
