Probabley GM speak for outsourcing at a cheaper price the Corsa sells that well they are thinking of shutting the factory that makes in Eisenach.

Vauxhall gearboxes rarely give trouble, so I can only imagine the makers are considering ways of improving their profit.

Why make a gearbox that is twice as good as the crap engine?

Vauxhall gearboxes rarely give trouble?

I thought many gearbox repair outfits' bread-and-butter was rectifying the 6-speed box used for example in Astra diesels, due to its bearings not being up to the job?

It's all over the Vauxhall forums, but as a personal experience, my mate had to take his in to get partially-rebuilt - he was directed to the middle of three ramps: the ramp either side each had another Astra on it having the same job done...

"We do a lot of these", said the mechanic.

The one in my own car hasn't gone seriously wrong -yet- but it whines like a 1950's gearbox when in 3rd or 4th. It's a poor-do.

Also their habit of buying in very reliable Aisin-Warner automatic transmissions and converting them into short life components by riding roughshod over the manufacturer's maintenance recommendations doesn't do them any favours.

Aisin's: "Fluid change biannually".

GM: "Filled for life with our snake oil".

Keeps the fleet buyers happy by reducing the servicing bills over fleet life, but every man jack of the things start to slip clutches like crazy at around 7 years old. By that time the fluid's beyond redemption and the filter's utterly knackered. As Aisin's design the filter to last the life of the 'box, with regular fluid changes removing most of the crud, it's not externally accessible.........

The information below features on a number of websites:

"From this November, the Corsa will also feature a new generation of Opel/Vauxhall engineered manual transmissions with a more precise and smooth gear change action. The base transmission was comprehensively re-worked with new gears and modified parts, including the shift rods and fork shaft. The end result is high shift comfort and optimised operation in cold and warm conditions."

GM take engineering cost cutting to extremes.

It's about the only engineering they do well in my view..

The worst gearbox I have ever experienced was the so-called Easytronic semi-automatic in a 2009 Corsa. I hope that has been improved since then - anyone know?

That was a Fiat gearbox from GM's short-lived tie-up with Fiat - even Vauxhall fans stayed clear of that one!

To be fair to GM (yes.. it's not easy I know),,, no-one has made a successful semi automated gearbox.. Toyota have not - it was prone to jerkiness etc - and they are vastly more competent at engineering than GM...

(The Toyota MMT gearbox has been replaced by a CVT one on most models I belive)

Mercedes have produced a semi auto box for years without problems or do you mean a manual one with loads of servo motors.
