vauxhall corsa b - scrapped car, garage gave half of what he said. - Fleabie36

Hi my daughter set off on a shopping trip and the car broke down. She was in the middle of nowhere an hour away and i found and telephoned the nearest garage for pick up. They said it was irrepairable as the gasket had blown and not worth the costs but that i should get about £120 scrap and £20 deducted for truck pickup leaving me £100ish.

I received a cheque for £50 yesterday, telephoned the car breakers to find out how much they purchased the car for and they informed me the guy who picked up and bought the car was on holiday and no amount was placed int he book next to the reg. How convenient.

Do i trust the garage after telling me i should get £100 over the phone??? Do i drive all that way to confront him and ask for him to show me the invoice from the breakers???

Please help my dilemma

.... So you got your car removed and you got £50 for it, £70 to tow to a scrapyard and the inspection to tell you it was irreparable, that's life, Put it behind you...

well i'm glad i didnt read your reply before i went to the garage to confront them! They didnt tow my car to a breakers yard! the breakers went to their garage and picked up my car and another one they had waiting for the scrappers. If someone tells you on the phone the costs from a garage do you not expect it to be that price??? or do you expect them to add further costs when you get there?

turned out that the owner of the garage's father who is retired did a cash in hand transaction to save on tax and v.a.t (making out he was doingme a favour) and thats why there was no invoice with my cheque or breakdown. the father and son passed the buck between themselves and i got a further £20 cash out of them. Why should i be ripped off when being told by the son who is the owner that the car should fetch £120 less £20 for being towed 1 mile to the garage? Turns out they got £100 for the car, but whose to say thats the truth, appears to be no paperwork from the breakers or in the garage itself,. Thats 2 business's that aren't declaring jobs to the tax man. Also taking advantage of female drivers!!

Out of interest, are you taking this any further, reporting to relevant body, or are you happy with the final outcome?

strange question from ??? personal interest in the garage? what would you do as a customer anywhere knowing things werent true and you'd been ripped off ? As i said i have no proof as to what the car sold for and i guess no-one will find anything written down, i have to take their word.

If i had been told of extra costs at the end of the days phonecall to the owner then i would have known what to expect. Not to be told one amount then given half of that.

I still feel angry and seething due to the fact I had been taken as a mug, having to drive out to a garage to be face to face, i was going to write a letter but good job i didnt as it would have got me nowhere. Basically i was ripped off and lied to both by the owner of the garage which i held all the telephone calls with, the person who told me the deducted costs and actually hold responsible for the fact that i did not receive the cars value less £20, thats who i was dealing with! He told me his father was dealing with it but he knew nothing regarding the £20 deduction, basically adding dedeductions and costs which on the phone i was not made aware of at 5pm that day, i guess this was a top up of pension!! It states who owns the garage on the internet but who ACTUALLY runs it,???

Coincidentally there's another thread running at the moment where someone is making a big issue about an amount of £30. Honestly, it just isn't worth the hassle.

The best thing you and your daughter can take from this is that her next car needs to something other than a Vauxhall. If she needs another small, reliable car she would do well to choose something Japanese and petrol-powered.

I think some could take umbrage at that, particularly on t'other side.

However, I was was born and bred in Lu'on and have never owned a Vauxhall.

I wonder why?

The car will not have been scrapped, it will have been repaired and will be on sale somewhere, expect to see it soon.
