Volkswagen Golf - VW Golf MK 6 Diesel 140 GT TDI clutch problem - Nizfella
I purchased my 09 plate VW Golf GT 140 Diesel with 26000 miles on the clock from a VW dealership in April 2012...Yesterday I took the car to my local dealership as i had noticed the clutch burning when i park up over a kerb at work, i have been driving for over twenty years, having had many cars from new and nearly new this is the first time i have had a problem with a clutch...The mechanic stated that there was a problem with it...The servicing team stated that I would have to bring the car back for them to investigate it...he states that it could be either a mechanical fault or driver fault...I have an extended warranty...He stated that the clutch wouldn't be covered if it was found to be my fault! The cost being around £960.00. I stated that if that was the case, how could they determine that it was my fault when I've only had the car for five months having covered less then 4000 miles....Being the second owner etc..I'm due to take the car back on the 4th October, I'm beginning to think already that there going to find no mechanical fault and that I'm going to have a bill for almost a thousand pounds for a car I've had for five months! Anyone had similar issues with VW...Any advice out there would be much appreciated....

You can burn a clutch out quite easily in a very short period of time if the car in its previous life has been on motability or rental or a company car then the driver wouldn't care a hoot about the repairs.Whether its covered by your gaurantee I would not know but the dealer has a moral responsibility to put it right I would also think that this is covered by the SOGA regs.

Under SOGAT, past abuse by a previous owner means the garage is liable to repair it foc.

With your miles and time, it would be a brave garage which could prove driver error.

INSIST that when it is removed, the clutch is photographed in situ before removeal and marked. This way there can be no doubt it is the clutch they thhen subsequently show you - if they claim it's abuse.

Put it in writing -politely of course..

Result - VW stated that my clutch wasn't covered under the VW warranty and that the clutch plate was warped etc The price to fix the clutch etc came in at £1060.00 but they would reduce the price as a good will gesture giving me a 60% reduction....I stated that I wasn't happy to pay as I had only owned the car for just over four months and done 5000 miles. I had been to the trading standards and quoted the SOGA....with the possibility of going to the small claims court....15 minutes later my local VW dealer told me that he had discussed it with his manager and that there would be no cost to pay....now I'm happy again :-)

Brilliant result.

I was going to say that VW customer service (from personal experience), are the most belligerant set of persons I have ever had the misfortune to deal with.

They obviously tried it on with you at first, so well done also on your efforts.

BTW, I had an identical problem on a Subaru Legacy and they changed it FOC without question.

Hi I am encountering a similar problem. Purchased a Golf 7 weeks ago 61 plate with 28,000 miles.!600miles covered during that period. Wednesday morning starting first thing in the mornng gear selection became impossible. The car and I limped 6 miles to vw dealer and was subsequently told the clutch was worn out. The car was driven the previous day by my wife and no fault was noticed.

The Dealer is not following the process laid out in the warranty document and has now decided to contact the Dealer where the car was purchased ( 20 miles away) on Monday( today is Friday) and is simply attempting to pass the problem onto them.

I wait for a outcome..........

The dealer where you have taken the garage to is quite correct.

Clutches and 'friction materials' are usually specifically excluded from warranties. Therefore it SHOULD be entirely up to you to get the selling dealership to repair, as the car was 'not fit for purpose'.

I suggest you go and have a complete read of your warranty document, checking as to what is (and is not) covered before blaming the garage where the car is at currently for 'not following procedure'.

In fact, in a couple of minute's of work, I found VWs 'approved used' warranty document online. Page 13 specifically excludes 'clutch preesure plates, bearings and friction materials'.

So, back it onto to the selling dealer for repair.

Re gear selection became impossible.

This is possibly not the friction material failing (that doesn't make gear selection difficult) but the concentric slave cylinder usually fitted to 6 speed 2.0 diesel (fitted inside bellhousing not on top as per the 5 speed box). When it fails it's a bit like not pushing the pedal far enough down or eventually not down at all (this does make gear selection difficult). It also usually covers the clutch internals in brake/clutch fluid - not good.

Any "fluid" under the bellhousing?

If it is this then it should be covered by the warranty

PS shouldn't this be in technical?
