Hello
Just to check a couple of things....the work carried out was not at a Mitsu dealer?
The repairs did not need to take place?
The Lancer is sold all over the world and they change some suspension parts to suit as best as possible the enviroment where the car is sold. In the UK this has led to an issue which is very clearly heard in the cabin.
Its the bearing or the bushes in the top strut which is why you can here the clunk so loudly as its right near the dash board! You might also notice the front passanger/driver window pane vibrating or the glovebox chattering as its passing that vibration in to the car. You said you replaced the top shocks but did you replace the part at the very top where there should be a small rubber seal with lube in it and a bearing.
Any Mitsu dealer should be able to look at this and tell you instantly if its the problem with out involving any cost. Most Mitsu dealers will look for free at problems, I suspect you were not getting repairs done at Mitsu dealer?
The bad news is there is some serious labour time in getting the strut off and the bearing sorted and putting it all back together. I would hazzard 2 hrs labour plus the part at about £10. Mitsu dealers charge between £45 and £55 an hour so theres cost for you.
I would give a call to Mitsu UK and complain and you might just get a bit of discount! This effecting a lot of Lancers (2005 - 2008) and should really be a recall issue!
I hope that helps!
