Could someone please advise which protocol the diagnostics are on the 406 & if the OBDII ELM327 READER IS COMPATIABLE

As above, the Lexia Planet system is the correct one.

Lexia -planet is the name Peugeot give to their own dignostic system.It is not a protocol.A 406 diesel of this age is not obd 2 compliant and will need a tester that has Iso protocol.(this is the address system so that the tester can "talk").hth
