Ford Focus 1.6 - Wheel Wobble with 2 new front tyres - Danny CTOW

3 days ago I had 2 new tyres fitted to my focus, front passenger was worn to 2mm and rear drivers had sidewall damage, the new tyres were both put on the front axle and existing other 2 tyres on the rear (both have 5mm treat remaining). The car then developed a vibration/wobble through the steering wheel at speeds of 55-65 mph. I returned to the tyre centre and reported the problem, they checked the wheels and tyres and identified a flat spot in the front passenger alloy wheel, I bought a new alloy from the nearest Ford Dealer and had the new tyre put on this new rim. The wobble continued, I again returned to the tyre dealer and after one of the fitters came out in the car with me he checked all of the wheels for flat spots and the balance again 'on the finest setting and they are all now zero'. Despite this the vibration/wobble is still occurring at around 60mph. After spending £140 on 2 tyres, £180 on a new alloy wheel, £15 on the tyre fitting and almost 4 hours of my time I am very frustrated, have lost confidence with the tyre dealer and seem to be not much further forward. I would be grateful for any advice as to the cause of the wobble and what the solution may be.

Take it to another reputable tyre company for a second opinion badly balanced wheel wobble on the front wheels occurs at 55 to 65 mph felt through the steering wheel .

I once had a couple of new tyres fitted to the front of a car at a place I'd used for years and thought they had a good reputation. They took three attempts at removing the wobble introduced with the new tyres, insisting it must have been there before, as they have the machine calibrated once a month!

At the third attempt they put one of the wheels on the machine and immediately called to a mate to remove the other front wheel - I didn't see the figures.

It's still not quite right.

Could be a faulty tyre.

Get the wheels rebalanced and insist that stick-on weights are used. It's impossible to balance the wheels using weights which clip onto the rim with sufficient accuracy.

I've had new tyres fitted to the front wheels and had to take the car back because of wheel wobble. Clip-on weights have always been the answer! They can be positioned anywhere across the width of the wheel rim as required, so give greater accuracy in balancing.

If that doesn't work find somewhere that has the equipment to balance the wheels on the car. That always works!

I don't rightly know if this is relevant but the last time I had new tyres fitted in the UK I watched them being balaced and commented to the fitter that they didn't seem to be spinning very fast. He said that the new type machines only spin the wheels and tyres to the equivalent of a road speed of about 30 mph as the older, faster machines were banned by- yes, you it guessed it- the Health and Safety lot.

Perhaps someone who has recent experience of working with tyre fitting and balancing could comment.

Further on balancing-about 3 years ago I needed an expensive new rear motorcycle tyre for a very quick powerful bike, the only place selling that type of tyre were too busy to fit it and balance it, so I got another tyre workshop to fit it but they didn't have the correct adapters to balance it. I decided to try static balancing it on a pair of axle stands using the wheel spindle and the wheel bearings as a pivot and applying self-adhesive weights as necessary. It took some time and a lot of patience but I got it so it would not stop in any particular place after being spun by hand. Not expecting a great result I fitted it to the bike and tested it-gobsmacked,no vibration even at high speed, I can't say I recommend this method, but it can be done if you have to.

A wheel out of balance at 1 mph will be out of balance at 100mph.. Unless physics have changed...

Yes, but the out of balance forces at one mph will be so small as to be undetectable, but at 100 mph will be 100 times more the force at one mph.
