Sounds like your swirl flaps have fell off.

Take the plastic engine cover off (it pops off) and have a look.

If it's fell off you'll need a new intake manifold,or you can glue it back on.

Do a search on the Vauxhal forums.

Very common on a Vectra that age.

If you don't know where to find your inlet manifold, you may do more harm than good (sorry) !

Try looking on the vectra C forum

Vectra-C.com

Loads of help and good information there.

And a 'How to' section

But if your not too good with cars, take it to your local INDEPENDENT garage.

Don't go to a Dealer, they are hopeless and a money pit.

Most problems with these are down to vacuum faults or swirl flaps.

A code read really is the place to start !

Good Luck

Had a similar problem with an Audi A4 1.9 tdi a few months ago - in 1st & 2nd gear was ok up to 2 - 2.2k revs and then no power (i.e. 'held back') and then suddenly a surge of power after 2.3k revs with lots of smoke out the back. Took it to an independent VW specialist. Split turbo boost pipe. £80 to fix all-in.

So, basically, would advise you take it to an independent GM / Vauxhall specialist.
