General Question well 2 really.

First has anyone any experience of these new fangled test meters for use on timing belts? From what I understand they use the frequency of vibration when the belt is 'pinged' (engine stationary of course) to determine/judge the correct tension.

Second - does anyone know of a UK facility that hires out specialist automotive tools (like one above and others) to punters?

CAF- Camberley Auto Factors used to hire certain automotive tools whether they do the fancy tensionser tool I don't know.Probably of no help if your're not in the South ! What's wrong with the tried and tested finger test for petrol and even tighter for diesel ?

Thanks Greaser.

There probably isn't anything wrong with the tied and tested approach.

I was prompted to ask only because I was reading a trade magazine and Goodyear (belt maufacturer) stated the finger test was 'no good these days particularly on modern automotive diesels' and recommended the tool I mentioned.

I was just curious to know a little more.

I've found the tool mentioned here:

Still sounds like a case of emperor's new clothes to me. A timing belt's reliability is affected by more than just being correctly tensioned, such as how old the belt was before being fitted, how long it's been on the car, whether it's been removed at any time, the heat/moisture conditions it's had to endure etc etc. Much rather chamge it and be on the safe side.

I just let the tensioner do the tensioning, and then it can ping as much as it likes.
But if you have dismantled to the stage where you are testing it, I'd just replace it.

Hi - thanks for the replies.

It was not my intention to set any hares running - as I said I was just curious with the theory, practice and the forums opinions on the 'frequency' approach to achieving correct tension.

I would never consider reusing a belt with an unknown history - if I have got the far with a job I don't want to be going back!

Once again thanks
