Renault clio 2002 petrol - Clio 2002 intermittent starting problems.. - bibliophile

My 2002 Clio refuses to start sometimes for reasons unknown to me.. It sometimes starts if I keep trying (up to 50 times). Here's a recording of the sound the car makes when I try to start it (unsuccessfully)

What could the problem be?

Moved to Technical. I don't think that link works any better than the Clio - lots of guff and no result.

This is a common problem with the clio. Its the earth lead from the battery, just connect a new lead directly from negative straight to the engine....

So what do you suggest I start with : the starter or the TDC based on the sound in the youtube clip?

I was going to suggest cleaning the crankshaft position sensor, until I heard the sound. It seems that the solenoid relay is engaging but the starter motor doesn't turn. Probably starter motor problem or solenoid connection.

With my clio, the motor turned but would not fire, and it was happening increasingly often. I read in another thread that a dirty crankshaft position sensor (above the gearbox) was the problem. I removed it and cleaned it and end of problem. Faultless now for at least a month. It is not very difficult to do, but I had a job getting the two bolts to start on the thread when re-fitting. With patience I was able to bolt the sensor back on.

I had a clio campus 1.2 8v 2006 with the same problem it turned out to be a chaffing wiring loom, just got the broken wire cut it and joined the two clean ends together with a connecting block and taped it up. hey presto no more problems. also got told by RAC to check the fuse box under the bonnet for moisture as this is also a potential cause as well as the previously mentioned crank sensor. hope this helps.
