Hello,

After a bit of advice please, doing a bit of family holidaying etc, this Friday I need to get to Chessington at 10am from St Albans, can someone give me an idea of St Albans departure time etc to make sure i don't get in trouble.

Google maps estimating 50mins?

Thanks

Hi

I live in st albans, and have driven that journey at many times of day, night, summer, winter...

I have to say though it is very hard to predict how long it will take, but my guess based upon a lot of experience is that gettin there will not be too bad, but getting back in the evening would be a lot worse.

It would take anything between 50 minutes and 2 and a half hours, that very journey took e 2 and a half hours just a few weeks back, the M25 was a car park the whole way down.

But that is very rare, most of the time I would allow an hour or a tad over, suggest as follows:

leave St Albans at 08.45
head down through Chiswell Green to M25 J21A, and go on the M25 towards heathrow.

Do not exit M25 unil Junction 9, there will be brown signs to go off before but DON'T. from J9 take left after slip road and this road, the A243 takes you straight there.

if the traffic is light you will be early, if it heavy you might be a little late so it would be about right.

Coming back, Friday evening! could take twice as long, Friday evenings are the worse.

Good luck

Thanks HJ and guygamps,

I'll check but I think the website suggests junc 10 so thanks for the junc 9 advice, getting back not too bad as we're staying in Kingston Upon Thames and then back up to the North West on Saturday morning,

Thanks again

If the traffic is really heavy (It often is) there is a little trick you can do to save you a little time.

On the Heathrow section go up the slip roads, over the round abouts and back down the other side of the slip road (Stay on the slip road as long as possible to get maximum advantage.

You can do this on all the Heathrow side except the M4 and M40 turnings

One bit of good news is that savners seem to congregate on the right hand side of the carriageway. So the left hand side appears to be northerners only. whch can be handy when its busy.

The best piece of advice I can give in regards to travelling on the M25 is to completely disregard any principles of human decency you may have once had. You own the road, all of it, and nobody is going to stop you. If you don't have that 'stuff everybody else' attitude you'll still be on it next tuesday.

Regulars will form a lynch mob for you now that this wheeze has been outed...glad i didn't tell 'em..;)

Indeed. It's people joining a motorway that cause the braking - much of it too sharp - which leads to the jams. The last thing anyone wants is people selfishly doing that unnecessarily.

As a Northerner myself (exiled down here by Tebbit et al twenty-five plus years ago), I'd say I hope you forget anything that you've been told about motorway driving. Or driving in general. Don't be courteous or in the least bit understanding or empathetic; you'll be seen as a loser on the Audi gravy train to middle class respectabilty and acceptance.

I concur. I went on the M25 for the first time ever this past Friday. We were right up at the top near Waltham Abbey/Enfield area. It wasn't as bad as I expected. We came down on the M6/M40 and that was quite reasonable, but Mr B decided to head back on the M1, which I will never repeat; it was awful - clogged up, slow, rude drivers, people filling the right-most lane but nobody in the left lane (not even trucks). You realise just how much bigger the population density in the SE is, compared with Lancashire!

Agree about the M40 route, it doesn't carry anywhere near the volume of cars or trucks so the bunching problem isn't so bad problem being you are then comitted to the M6 to/from northwest.

M6 can be a swine, you must have luckily chosen a quiet time for your journey.

Yeah, don't normally go any further south than Jct 26 of the M6 but we did use the toll route on Thursday evening to skip the worst.
